Unable to install dMC R16.6 Reference Registered

I just upgraded from dMC R13.5 Ref. to R16.6 Ref.
I am unable to get R16.6 to install.
[dMC-R16.6-Ref-Registered.exe (35,430,640 bytes)]
Each attempt goes from a pop-up saying:
"Installer
Processing Installer"
to two Windows pop-ups saying:
"C.tmp-dMC-Ref-Registered-32bit.exe has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry ..."
(Each attempt creates newly named files in %TEMP%.)

I uninstalled R13.5 first, before trying the R16.6 install.
* Though installing R16.6 fails, re-installing R13.5 does not.

I am installing from Safe Mode.
There is no security software running.
The installer *is* able to access my %TEMP% folder.
Each install attempt writes 2 files, of the form:
C.tmp-dMC-Ref-Registered-32bit.exe (17,754,864 bytes)
spiC.tmp (16,919,457 bytes)
No disk space errors; C: has >= 11 GB of free space.

The target system is Windows XP SP3, 32-bit AMD, 1 GB RAM.
It has all the updates that Microsoft offered for XP.
(I use this older system for a few dedicated purposes.)

I have searched the forum and read other accounts.
None I've seen so far have matched or solved my issue.

Again -- key -- R13.5 *will* install, R16.6 does not.
What dependencies does R16.6 have that R13.5 does not?

Did you try to install the 32bit or the 64bit version?

As a test can you try to install TuneFusion:

Did you try to install the 32bit or the 64bit version?

The Windows error pop-ups (see above) confirm 32-bit executable.
Likewise, Cygwin "file" command.

As a test can you try to install TuneFusion:

Same failure response with TuneFUSION R1.1 Trial.
Again, Windows error pop-ups confirm 32-bit.

While I did uninstall dMC-R13.5-Ref-Registered, the following still show as installed:
dAP Control Freak
dAP Skin Magnum
dBpowerAMP
dBpoweramp DSP Effects
dBpowerAMP FLAC Codec

Do I need to remove any of these for successful installation?
(I didn't want to lose the old Audio Player if I could help it...)

Also, I captured copies of the 2 error report files that Windows
offered to send to MS, if those might be at all helpful...

Those other programs would not matter. Ensure Windows XP is fully patched, I tried a fresh Windows XP SP3 install just now then downloaded the trail for dBpoweramp from:

https://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

It installed without issues.

Same test conditions and same response on 2 different XP systems.
What dependencies does R16.6 have that R13.5 does not?

Personal thought. It's time go give up on XP and move on.

I have a variety of hardware and software that I use in different ways.
I have reasons for keeping a couple of XP systems in service.
It would be most convenient for me if one can run R16.6 vs. R13.5.
Maybe it can, and maybe it can't.
I do start by checking system requirements statements.
I guess in this case I should have tested R16.6 Trial next.

Look in Event viewer for the crash, it should be under application, please post the contents.

It could be the CPUs are too old to run this R16. The error message gives no real indication of the fault, just a changing fault address. The difference between R13 is that it would have used an older version of Microsoft's compiler, R16 will use Visual Studio 2013, that specifically supports XP if you tell it to.

Is the installation process *itself* that intense...?

I did manage to use the slower of these laptops as my primary
machine until 2018, and was typically running:
Firefox 48.0.2 (usually 6+ windows)
Thunderbird 45.8.0 (POP)
LibreOffice 5.0

And someone recently told me:
"If the hardware runs XP, it can run 10."

Let me know if anything else comes to mind.
I'll try to free up a different machine for ripping.

It is not about speed, but cpu instructions supported, it is possible that the later Microsoft compilers will not work with very old CPUs.
