    DVD ripping

    In order of priority

    1) DVD layer of DualDisc
    2) DAD 24/96 and HDAD
    3) Advanced resolution stereo from DVD-Audio. At least rip them to 16 bit/ 48 kHz format

    3) has some painful technical hurdles, but there are definitely some interesting titles.

The ultimate cheeze technique for 3) is a DVD player that outputs DVD-audio over standard S/PDIF (Meridian, at least, makes this) and just record from that.

    Re: DVD ripping

This would be a totally different project, and would probably (IANAL) also render the software illegal in major jurisdictions.

      Re: DVD ripping

Is it the software that is illegal or the application of that software could be used to perform an illegal act?

        Re: DVD ripping

Could be the use, could also be the distribution of the tool -- see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnyDVD, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Decrypter or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Shrink . Again, IANAL.

And again, this is something technically completely different than ripping audio CDs.

Indeed it is, but not something to be ruled out because it is different.

Granted it would be a completely new software, but if the technical ability is there, why not go for it. I would love a program that had that ability to be created by the geniuses that created DMC, etc.

              Re: DVD ripping

There is NOTHING wrong with making DVD ripping software. But it IS illegal to make DVD ripping software that has a decrypter.

Maybe the poster did not intend to mean illegal dvd ripping software. Maybe he or she was suggesting legal dvd ripping software--ones that do NOT have a decrypter.

Some cheap DVD movies are not copy protected. So if it is not copy protected, you have the right to rip the unprotected DVD if your purchased the DVD and use it for a backup, for personal use only, and not for public exhibiton(or sharing). There are SOME hollywood b-list movies that are not protected for some reason.

Also one more thing: If making a DVD copy, of a DVD that you purchased that is not protected, you also must not reverse engineer it. So as long as you keep the VOB files as they are without changing the bitrate, you are all good. But if you reverse engineer it such as changing bitrate or something, then that is not considered an exact copy, and may be illegal.

Totally agree, but which one you usually use?
                  Freeware or shareware?
