Try doing things to the computer hard disk (not to Creative Zen), does encoding to the computer lock up as well?

When it locks up everything stops, including the mouse? which windows version?

Re: Sveta Beta and Creative Zen Touch

I have had these lockups converting just about everything.....ripping from cd to c drive and to my usb drive ,and just converting from one format to another..and also to the zen......but not every time.

This morning i converted mabe 15 songs frome ape to mp3,converted at least 5 from mp3 to zen and one ape to Zen and no lockup altho i did have 3 ape files that returned decompression errors when tryin to convert to mp3 lame,
but errors i can live with.

also i have the conversion for zen set to not convert if they are already mp3

and i have winxp pro sp2 all patched and plugged

when it locks up everything freezes, have to do a hard shut down.

If XP is locking up then I am quite certain it is a hardware problem, perhaps the CPU is overheating?

Put another way, I could try deliberately to try to lockup XP totally (by writing a program) and I wouldn't suceed.

Try taking the side off of your computer and blowing a large floor fan into it on high. Does it still lock up?
Also, when it crashes, if you place your finger on the CPU heatsink, are you nearly burned? If so, you need a new CPU heatsink/fan or better case ventilation. Ask your local geek or computer store for assitance with this.

Hell i can do that an i cant program a bit

I have used every version of windows since 3.1 and without a doubt xp is the the most stable yet,I have only had one BSOD in about 2 years of use and a updated video driver solved that problem.

I wouldnt rule out a hardware problem.....i dont think it is cpu overheating as i have tempurature monitoring in my bios....but i will check into it

But i do find it rather odd that i only have this problem when converting or ripping music...altho i suppose it is rather cpu intensive

I have no cover on my machine so I will keep an eye on cpu ,have to use the old WCF on it

Try to do your conversions at a priority "below normal".

Re: Sveta Beta and Creative Zen Touch

Well, "below normal" priority is meant to avoid hogging the CPU at 100% not to melt it :D

Well if i have a overheating problem i intend to find out

I used the WCF(Well Calibrated Fingertip) this morning, about 4 seconds and i had to let loose...according to bios cpu is running about 170 degrees, machine has been on ,witha couple of reboots, since 11:00pm last nite

I hope those are Fahrenheit degrees :D

Still that's about 77C and that is probably way too hot. Are you a guitar player with callouses on your fingertips? That should have burnt you before 4 seconds

Yea, 170F is WAYY to hot for the CPU. Anything over about 150F results in lockups and crashing. Sounds like its time for a new CPU heatsink/fan. Also, you might want to take a good look at the airflow in your case.

And ChristinaS, if that was Celsius, his CPU would be a puddle under the heatsink

Still pick a little but not too many callouses anymore :(

However i did find the fan on the via chipset to be DOA...took apart an cleaned but is barley turning, dont know if that would affect cpu temp, but i will get another and the cpu fan as well and maybe get an extra case fan as well

:D We are using the metric system in Canada :D Water freezes at 0C and boils at 100C and normal human body temperature on the surface is 36.7C. :D
Just don't talk to me about what normal atmospheric pressure is LOL!
