FLAC files ripped from CD w/Replay Gain to Cowon X7 - volume too low

This is my first time dealing with lossless files. I ripped my CDs to files and then copied to my new Cowon X7. When I play the songs, the volume needs to be inordinately high for average listening. Is there something else I need to do?

If you do not have replaygain then the volume is ok? sounds like an issue with the cowon and replaygain.
