audio files as 8bit 8KHZ u-law format

Hi

I need to create some audio files as 8bit 8KHZ u-law format.
I believe I can do this using DB power amp?
Do you know in which format should I record the files? Would a WAV at 44khz suffice and then I convert to the required specs after or would this cause distortion to the file?
