Re: Unable to read .cda file

but no dMC CD Audio Input.
dMC Audio CD Input is builtin to dMC (dBpowerAMP Music Converter).
Uninstalls/reinstalls should be done through the control panel, with the possible exception of situations where Music Converter is installed without administrative priviledges (which I don't think is the case here).

What settings (bits, bitrate, frequency, etc) are you using for the WMA files you are trying to create? If you try to convert an mp3 or wav file to the same settings do you get the same error message?

Uninstall dBpower AMP WMA V9 Codec and rip using dBpower AMP WMA V9.1 Codec. Works for me. It's the only thing I can see that's different in our setups.
      Hope it helps.

That generates an new and very confusing error:
"The output file '\\CdRom\N. Nuenco2.wav' could not be opened." The settings are still for output to be Windows Media wma.

Are you using the option to delete original file? saving output to the same folder?

            Codec: Windows Media Audio 9.1
Settings: 20 kbps, 22kHz, stereo CBR
Error: Ref message below, ripped to .wav then ripped to .mp3 then went back to attempt to rip to .wma and now I get the original error code which I got prior to removal of the v9 codec. Namely "The CODEC required to compress 'C:\Documents and Settings\Arthur\Desktop\N. Nuenco2.wma' could not be opened."
Yes works fine for both wav & mp3.

No Christina, I am saving to Desktop for this trial period same settings as for making .wav & .mp3 files which work fine.

Is Professional Frequency enabled in dMC Configuration?

Hey, I have no clue why you are having so many problems with this silly conversion. Sorry. XP, SP2 and WMP10 seems to give no end of grief to folks. This is why I'm sticking with my old trusted W2K :D

But to tell the truth I personally prefer to always rip to wav and then convert separately to compressed formats. Since I don't do massive ripping, space or time are not a problem.

So you've already tried to completely uninstall everything: dMC programs and codecs, and then reinstall all fresh to the same folder.

Do I understand correctly that you cannot convert anyhting to wma using either dMC or dMC Audio CD Input?

Yes dBpowerAMP conversion to .wma works fine.
No I have not done a mass uninstall / reinstall yet but that action seems imminent.

Professional frequency seems to be the only thing you didn't activate. Try that.

Otherwise, you'll have to resign yoruself to the possibility that maybe you have to do 2 step-conversions when you rip.

Try setting a different compression from Audio CD Input (rip button menu >> compression settings).

The mystery becomes even more curious. After reading this suggestion and reasoning that it had little chance of success since I had already switched from 22 to 44 kHz as you previously advised, I just ripped four wma's successfully from the same source CD .cda files each at previously attempted settings of:
20 kbps, 16 kHz, stereo CBR
20 kbps, 22 kHz, stereo CBR
32 kbps, 22 kHz, stereo CBR
128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo CBR

Not even a full moon here!!!

Where can I go to understand these compression settings and their effects. What effect does variation in kbps and in kHz have on the result. My selection process has been only to pick something which results in a "reasonable" file size for the particular appplication.

Let us hope that is the end of it but I worry that I continue not to have any explanation since I have made no software change throughout this process other than a few reboots. We do not know the root cause.

Many thanks to all of the participants in this thread for your tenacity and goodwill.
