    Re: new skin site discussions

    Hi,

I think one site for skin saves all from confusion. If i send a skin in the address <spam pickup removed> in which site it's going to come.
Hope I am not nagging u with my silly doubts
    Thanks

on the skin site i am making, Narler has made a tutorial on how to add your skin to the site http://www.sensory-fusion.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66

it is more about the skin designer self managing their own skins. if you cannot follow or understand the instructions i will help you through it all to get you started.

        Great! Razgo!!!

I must say I really like the looks of the new skin site, GREAT WORK!!!!!!! Beats the hell out of all the old ones put together...:D hope it is easier to administrate too!
I agree with Spoon on the "ease of use" issue. It would be great if it could be very open for ALL users, registered or unregistered, perhaps with some privileges reserved for registered users, but then again, why really?
I also agree that the "old" skin sites - 3!!! including the oldest one in the forum page - could/should be shut down.
Thanks Razgo for your great work in this!!! a vast improvement in a great direction in my opinion and I hope the other skinners will like it to, and that it will attract new skinners as well :smile2:

          Re: new skin site discussions

thanks Bestrip, i was hoping that this new skin site would start to reflect what everyone wanted in general.

the reason for registrations are many. some of the basic/main reasons are:

          1. the forum is more readable when people use a nickname instead of "unregistered" appaering all over the place.

          2. when a user registers it enables others to look for more posts by that user that might be of use to you when looking for information on a forum.

          3. as a registered user you get the added benifit of keeping track of your posts and being notified when someone responds to your posts.

          4. as a registered member you can subscribe to a thread and or Forum to recieve updates daily or instantly or weekly, even if you haven't posted in that forum/thread.

          4. from an admin point of view the forum can be better managed when users register.

          5. when i turn on "you must be registered" to download i can then track if there is any files being leeched for unsavoury reasons.

          6. for security reasons it is best to have skinners registered and assigned to a group that i can then allow to upload attatchments.

          7. the list goes on but you get the general idea :D

i think once all the skins are up and running and all skinners are on board and know how to manage their skins on the new site, we will then consider closing down the old sites.

once you register on the new site i will help you through the process.

thanks! the colors are based off a really old yabb forum from years ago that i liked. and the icons and images i made to look kind of skinnish/arty farty :D

i wasn't too sure if anyone would actually like it as it is very different. but that was the whole idea was to seperate it from the rest and give it it's own unique look and style. i think i acheived at least that :p :p

              Re: new skin site discussions

the only thing i haven't been clear on is the DFC club. the DFC club is different from being a skin designer and the skin site. well i mean you don't have to be a skinner to be in the DFC club.

the plan and concept behind DFC will slowly reveal itself as it develops over time. but basically DFC members are fans and or supportors of dbpoweramp software suite. Just like the "vip members" and "dbpoweramp staff" concept was based on an idea i had to help advance the support that the dbpoweramp forums needed here.(a big thanks to our dbpoweramp staff members ) so i am hoping more things like this will come out of the DFC club concept. this way it can take on a personality of it's own and grow into something fun and hopefully something that helps others too.

                Re: new skin site discussions

                Hi Razgo,

There are 4,674,571 downloads on the dBpowerAmp Music Converter from download.com. Out of these only 3,506 persons have over the years become members on the dBpowerAmp forums...

So... roughly 1 out of a 1,000 users get involved enough to register. I would rather have a thousand times more users have access to the skins I've made than only the 3,506 users who probably already have most of the ones they like.

You might think that it will get more "unregistered" to register and maybe a tiny percentage will, but then again this demand will to some degree piss the rest off, and I feel that would be a very "un-dBpowerAmp'ish" thing to do...

The skins are just a tiny little extra addition to dAP and it would feel totally wrong if there would be ANY restrictions on its usage. Everything else in dAP is offered so freely and THAT is one of the foremost things I LOVE SO MUCH about dBpowerAmp! I want to keep it that way, at least for the skins I’ve made...

there is no restrictions. having to register is not a restriction. it is really quite simple to register.

i am not making registration to "make" people register or do anything. registration keeps a site well orginised and easier to maintain and admin.
if having to register pisses some people off, well they will have to get over it. i think what i do is far from "un-dBpowerAmp'ish" but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

                      apparently not...
Why don't you ask Spoon to have the dMC and dAP program downloads also to require registration before downloading... he might think it's a great idea...

i don't understand where your post is going?

what does spoon's dap and dmc have to do with my skin site i am making? the site here is run by spoon. the site i am running is run by me. two different things.

anyhow as per my first post, my site is open for business for those who wish to participate.

                          Re: new skin site discussions

Well my choice of policy for a site housing the skins I've made would have been more open and freely accessible for downloading... i.e. not having to be registered to be able to download.

On the other hand I do think you have done a nice job on your new site (assuming it isn't altogether finished) it looks great and I think it has a great potential!!! ...and I also think you are doing a great job on the dBpowerAmp site as well... This I have thought all along, but for some reason that I don't understand, you appear to think that I'm all against you if I don't agree with all of your ideas... If we were to sort out all of our "differences" I think we'd find we agree on most (if not all?) of these issues? (...not saying we have to do all that:D)

I have looked at and kept stats on the skin downloads all since I made the first skin... (not that very rigorously but still…). In 1 year there has been about 5-8 thousand downloads of the better ones while there has been only around a thousand new registered users for the dBpoweramp site… this tells me that there will possibly be a decrease in downloads (and users) by about that much (4-7 thousands) if requiring registration to be able to download. I think it is a pity if some people who perhaps would have stayed with dAP and become supportive users, would be scared of by having to register to have that little extra thing called a skin… I have left some web places because of having to register to use them… apparently I’m not alone in this behaviour…
There are 4,674,571 downloads on the dBpowerAmp Music Converter from download.com. Out of these only 3,506 persons have over the years become members on the dBpowerAmp forums...
I think there would be a substantial decrease in download stats for dMC if a registration was required before a download… and I don’t think of it as a “have to get over it” –thing…

what does spoon's dap and dmc have to do with my skin site i am making? the site here is run by spoon. the site i am running is run by me. two different things.
I made the skins for the dAP PUBLIC, and all I’m interested in is to have them being as much and easily accessible to that public as possible… trying to give something back for all the joy dAP has brought me :smile2:

                            (Razgo).

I must admit I (too) am a bit bothered by the notion that a user would have to register to download a skin and I would agree with BestRip that this would seem likely to deter some users from trying out skins. Could you (Razgo), expound a bit on what your concerns are with respect to file leeching? Is this a real or potential problem currently? Since I have not been aware of this particular issue it does catch me by surprise and I find myself unable to explain to myself or to others as to why registering to download a skin is a good idea.
                            Best wishes,
                            Bill Mikkelsen

                              Re: new skin site discussions

i think there is one "glaring" note you have missed here. you are assuming that all those downloads actually led someone to either using the skin or dap or dmc.

out of 3 million downloads of dmc there is no way to tell how many actually used it. and how many did only for 15 minutes then uninstalled it for another player.

this is potentially one of the biggest misconceptions of what online stats actually mean. however for those that take the time to register does indeed strengthen the fact they are actually somewhat more interested in the product than those that take no time to register and willy nilly download stuff never to actually try it.

anyhow you have also missed the fact that there is a place on the gallery to offer an offsite download location.

i really can't keep coming back here just to discuss skins and my site here. if anyone has issues with my skin site please take it up on the skin site.

as for why to register? i see no one has commented once about by posts above on the benifits of registration. which leads me to believe that it won't matter what i say. look at post number "19"
