it is not about the quality of the drive. Some drives read some CDs better than other drives. Seems like an odd thing, but in ripping over 5,000 CDs, every 100 or so CDs I have issues that are not fixable with one drive, then the same CD rips easily with AccurateRip match with a different drive.

Hi again, hope all is good! So I have a question please, if you could maybe shed some light on this for me. I have ripped my CD collection twice now. The first time was in "Free format" at 348kbps, the other settings were using secure ripping similar to your suggested settings, except I allowed 2 passes and too many frames to re-rip in the case of errors. As per the previous discussion I copied the files onto a USB drive and plugged it into the car audio, all the meta data was displayed, album art track name, number length etc, but they wouldn't play. I saved this rip on my Macbook as "Rip 1", then I re-ripped them again using "Target " into folder "Rip 2" with the default setting 130kbps and they played fine in the car. Because of vehicle/traffic noise etc it was good enough. (Rip 1 was 75gb of storage and Rip 2 about 30gb) I recently got a new Android phone, pretty advanced with plenty of storage, so I thought I'd try the first rip on the phone, again, ALL the meta data loaded etc, but the files wouldn't play. So I reverted back to "Rip 2" and they played. At home, in the evenings I use a pr of Sony WH1000XM4 headphones via bluetooth, which is probably not the best connection. However, using VLC player on the Macbook "Rip 1" in Free format at 348kbps plays not only fine, the sound quality difference is stunning! So when possible I will use that rip to play from. I recently also got a few new discs that I already ripped in Target for the car and phone, but I am going to go back and re-rip them in free format to add to "Rip 1". So, the question is why they play so well on the laptop at 348kbps with VLC player but wont play on the other devices? The sound difference is dramatic, and obviously preferable in "Rip 1" Free format at 348kbps. Perhaps if I rip in target at 192kbps it would improve a bit, but I doubt it will be anywhere close to the quality I got in "Rip 1" Thanks

Hey Ian,

it seems you have to much time to waste. You remember that I gave you the hint to rip to a lossless format? That way you could have convert your lossless files into any other format within minutes instead of reripping your CDs over and over again. Rethink your strategy!

Back to your question: the problem is that not each and every mp3 player can play all the different mp3 formats. The formats differ by the bitrate and if the bitrate is variable or constant. Therefore it is good to have and keep a copy of the audio files in a lossless format. Depending on the device and its player you can create a copy of your music in the needed format by just converting the lossless files.

These are odd bit rates to use for mp3. Typically the standard higher compression rates are 128 or 192, the better quality rates are 256 or 320. For most players 320 is the maximum.

To fix this try converting the MP3 files to a different format or bitrate that is compatible with your car’s system. You can use media conversion software to adjust the file settings and then copy them back to the USB drive.

It is best to avoid converting anything from a lossy format. The results will not be ideal. The better way is to follow the previous advice from Dat Ei and start with a lossless master rip. Once you have this you can create as many copies in various lossy formats as you want with only first generation loss each time.

Thanks guys! And yes, Dat, I do have too much time on my hands. I am retired and though I do have plenty to do, I can make time for ripping my CD's. I have taken note of your recommendation, and file "RIP 3" in FLAC is coming soon. I have 25 years of collecting my music on CD's and not all are in great shape anymore. In fact I bought a few new ones to replace damaged discs that I couldn't rip. Example Hotel California, track 1, 2 and 3 wouldn't rip, track 1 IS hotel California. I replaced the disc. Things have changed so much in the last 25 years for an old man like me catch up is a challenge at times. Gbrown, thanks for your comment too, when switching to "Target" the default rate was set at 130mbps, I just left it there not knowing any better. And Steve, thanks for your comments as well. The car system is a Harmon Kardon, I reached out to Suzuki Maruti (my car manufacturer) and asked for full specs on the system, I never got a reply. Bottom line, using "Target" at the lower bit rate solved the problem of playback, both in the car and on the phone. When I have got "Rip 3" done in FLAC then perhaps I can play around with adjustments to improve the quality. I was just confused why the laptop would play back the "Free format" at 348kbps (sounds amazing via Bluetooth) and the car and phone wouldn't. Everything was in MP3, I wasn't aware there were different types of MP3. I did that because 99% of devices work with MP3. I am learning by catch up, and FLAC is the next step. Sorry, you guys will get tired of me and all my questions, apologies in advance. After ripping one CD of 5 tracks now, all were accurate, but the first one had (200) 2nd, 3rd and 4th were (2) and the last I think was (1) why would this happen?

Hi Peter, thank you for that! It's done. Lastly for now, I am ready to start ripping my FLAC folder. Are there any recommendations on settings I should use? Like level 5 is default, should/could it be higher for better quality? Anything else I should know before doing this the 3rd and last time? Dat? That seems like it's your speciality? Any advice before I start is much appreciated. Thanks!
