JH, Well, I bought a DVD today (on Amazon) and it does not even have the band-member's names/instruments on; and the only image is a cheesy stock photo (which looks like they d/l it from 'Getty Images')! Never mind the listing of the Producer etc!

The image in the Amazon listing is actually different. It does feature a photo of the band 'Weather Report'; albeit with two WRONG band-members!

I have spent around 4 hours per CD over the last two days trying to acquire consistent information. During which, the fun goes out of it all, or me at least. As I have said before, we spend large amounts of money on a definitive boxset, and the record label fails to provide such basic information in the liner notes!

Yes. Release year and recording date and any other interesting thing you might want to know in the comment field.

    Re: Defining 'Compilation' (help?)

    Thanks a lot Oggy,

Well how about if I only had the TRACK NAME in the dedicated field, and the RECORDED DATE in a self-created tag:
"Blues"; and under a self-created tag RECORDING DATE: '1955'

"Summertime"; and under a self-created tag RECORDING DATE: '1975'

"Hot Jive"; and under a self-created tag RECORDING DATE: '1982'

... and them all sharing the (global) YEAR tag (eg.): '1990' (which is the RELEASE YEAR of the 'collection' CD).

OR, to substitute the 'collection' CD RELEASE YEAR with individual RELEASE YEARS for each and every track:
"Blues"; and under self-created tags RECORDING DATE: '1955', and YEAR '1957'

"Summertime"; and under self-created tags RECORDING DATE: '1975', and YEAR '1980'

"Hot Jive"; and under self-created tags RECORDING DATE: '1982', and YEAR '1987'

    Thanks very much.

then would you treat it by creating a RECORDING DATE tag for each track (ie. stating the original recording date of each track), as well as stating the year of the CD ('collection') RELEASE DATE in the YEAR tag? In which case you might have:
Track 1 (Rec. Date: 1955), Track 2 (Rec. Date: 1959), Track 3 (Rec. Date: 1964) ... and the (global) YEAR tag as '2012'.

The problem with this method would be that in the event you own the same track(s) on another CD (eg. the ORIGINAL) then you would have (in your CD rip collection) a duplicate track (which is fine), albeit with a different YEAR on it (which is not fine!)!

OR, would you treat it by creating a RECORDING DATE tag for each track (ie. stating the original recording date of each track), as well as creating a RELEASE DATE tag for each individual track (ie. stating the original release date of each track)? In which case you might have:
    Track 1 (Rec. Date: 1955 / Released: 1956), Track 2 (Rec. Date: 1959 / Released: 1961), Track 3 (Rec. Date: 1964 / Released: 1968).

In actual fact, rather than create a RELEASE DATE tag I would use the YEAR tag individually on each track for this purpose.

I am thinking the latter option might be best?

    Many thanks,

    Paul
    Hi Paul,

I may not be the best person to answer this, but I try and only, put the track name, and nothing but, the track name, in the track name box. If I wanted more info about the disc, I would pick up my tablet, and do a Wiki search.

I try and keep all file names, as short as possible, whilst using the correct names: that's my logic.

With your special interest in Jazz, I understand that you want more recorded data, but I'd try and keep your tags, as lean as you can.

So I think I am best treating it like a BOXSET where each track can have its own 'year'.

I will have to cross the Charlie Parker bridge when I come to it. I just need to get the Miles stuff out of the way. I would have had it all done hours ago had it not have been for this damn anthology malarkey and a tribute CD earlier on!

    Cheers,

    Paul
Well, you could ........ split the discs into date order, and name, and number them accordingly.

I know, it's that "choices", thing. Personally, I'm a man of simple taste.

I hope you don't have many Classical CDs! I put those off for nearly, two years.....
