    Connecting IDE drives externally

I am trying to setup some multi-drive robots and need some help/advice on the best way to connect the drives. All of the drives I will be using are IDE drives.

My choices for connecting the drives are USB, Firewire and eSATA. Here are the questions I need help with.

    1) I know there are still some issues with C2 pointers and some USB/Firewire bridge chipsets does anyone know of any issues using an eSATA to IDE adapter such as http://www.cooldrives.com/serial-ata...-adapter.html?

    2) What about an eSATA port multiplier...any know problems with dbPoweramp and these?

    3) Are directly connected IDE drives the only ones which suffer from the DMA/PIO thing or can any of the above mentioned connections also experience this?

    Thanks

    Re: Connecting IDE drives externally

    Steve,
When I asked Brendan recently he indicated that most modern USB and firewire bridges should not have a problem.
As far as PIO mode and eSATA multipliers, I don't know.

eSata would be the best, it is just SATA which is as close as you can get to IDE, but again if there is an adaptor then it might mess with c2 etc.

That is exactly what my question is about. Are there any particular eSATA adaptors which are known to work well with dbp. Further does anyone know of any issues with dbp and eSATA port multipliers.

          Thanks,

            Re: Connecting IDE drives externally

I have used USB 2.0 to IDE/sata adapters from Vantec that use "JMicron/JM20337" chipset and C2 information seems to work fine. Cooldrives.com looks like they have some IDE/sata converters that use the same chipset (at least from the pics). I would say they should work.

              Hi,i'm using this,UK thou:-

Looks similar, testing C2 with a scratched disc, says it detects but?
Using it to connect a Plextor 716A IDE drive,PC as no IDE connections.

There is another one as well, don't know how good etc:-

I did find more when i googled.

So that adaptor works with Plextor and C2 thats good to know. Does it also work with the FUA feature? Have you connected multiple IDE drives with this adaptor through a port multiplier? If so how did that work.

                Thanks
