    APL decoder? (Monkey's Audio)

    Hi,

I would like to my ape library (using APL format) into apple AAC files for iPod. I heard dBpowerAMP has good support of AAC files, so I'm trying it now.

However, it looks like dBpowerAMP doesn't support APL format yet although it supports APE format already. Is this true? If so, is it possible to ask you to support APL format?

Let me introduce APL format little. APL format is implemented as a link to APE files. Each APL file contains ID tags information and pointer to APE file. This is very useful format if you want to compress whole CD into one image (so no need to be confused by pre/post gap. always bit transparent CD image) and each track (for ease to use) simultaneously without sparing twice much disk space. Therefore, I decide to use APL/APE combination for my music library.

I'm appreciate if it is possible to support APL format. Thanks.

Is APL actually a playlist? like a meta file? A text file that you can edit using Notepad?

If so dMC doesn't support taking input from meta files. You need to give it the actual audio files themselves.

After a bit of goolging I think I understand you 've made ion big ape file for an entrei cd and an epl file for each of the tracks of the original cd giving the start and end postition or some such infromation plus tagging data corresponding to the track.

Isn't that what they call cue file?

Anyway, I don't think this is supported yet in dMC.

You can convert the entire big ape file to one big wav file and then maybe split the file by a wav editor program. Programs like Audacity for instance.

Also in dMC there's a dsp effect that allows to trim a certain length of play time from the start and from the end of the audio file, so you could manually extract individual tracks that way during conversion, but it surely would be tedious to do for a whole cd's worth.

Now this is me approaching things intuitively LOL!

I'm sure real users of this file format will pipe in with some actual knowldge.

No. APL is not a playlist. It is a kind of meta file. It is not a text file.

It is not possible to give the actual audio file (APE). Because APL file points a section (e.g. from 2:21 to 4:32) of an APE file. For example, there are one APE file (from 0:00 to 56:00), 1st track's APL file (points APE file between 0:00 and 2:23), 2nd track's APL file (points APE file between 2:25 to 5:32), 3rd, 4th...

      Thanks.

Oops. I wrote above while you were googling and you won. I was late, but I'm going to leave above as is.

And yes. It is similar to cue file. Actually, MakeAPL program creates APL files from cue file and APE image file. For example, if dMC could read a cue file, it solves my problem.

Last time Spoon mentioned it was in 2004 and said it was still on the to-do list. I think I remember seeing that he's hoping to put into dMC r12 support for cue files, which should include APL files too.

But what do you see if you open an apl file in Notepad? Might it be text?

APL file is composed of meta text data and APEv2 tag.

For a temporary solution, use WinampIn plugin with in_ape plugin can did the job. But no tag will be written to the converted file.

So it is a text file. Meaning you can manually get the information from it and use it separately.
