Freeformat 384 kbps mp3

i searched for freeformat and didn't find anything. i seem to remember trying to convert a freeformat mp3 a while ago and dBpowerAMP didn't recognize it. adding support for this format would be good for anyone that uses allofmp3.com because most of their source file music is encoded to freeformat 384.

That site says this:

For example, mp3 files are available in 128, 192, and 320 kbps forms

So there's not 384KBPS mp3. Another file type perhaps.

It appears that dBpowerAMP Music Converter cannot convert and that dBpowerAMP Audio Player (dAP) cannot play these files. See this thread: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=6075

The possible exception to this which one might try is that allofmp3.com in aan faq section (referenced in this post in the above thread here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showpost...4&postcount=14)
suggests that WinAmp with the MAD plug-in is able to read these files. If this is true, it might be possible to use the WinAmp MAD plug-in, the dB WinAmp Input Adapter codec from Codec Central and dBpowerAMP Music Converter to convert these tracks. However, I don't know for a fact that this will work or not. If you do try it, please let us know your results. (Note: This reportedly does not work-see post #8 in this thread below).

Please note that according the the thread referenced above, the MAD decoder used in the current dMC and dAP beta versions reportedly will NOT read, convert, play these files. Since some other programs are able to use the MAD decoder to convert or play these files, this is a bit surprising. And an improvement in the MAD decoder for dMC/dAP which would enable it to play these files seems like a worthy wish.

it's not on their website anywhere that i can find for what source they use for their Online Encoding (OE), so i asked tech support. the question and response from techsupport is below. they do have an option to buy music encoded from the original cd source, but not all music is available this way, and the cost is double. so to buy music using their OE, while i can choose the format and bit rate, it will all be encoded from a source file of mp3 384 kbps. so ideally, i want to start downloading music from them in 384 kbps mp3 rather than have them convert it from that lossy format to another. i hope this makes sense.

what is the source used for music encoded with OE? i always assumed it was a lossless format, and I usually choose a high bit rate to capture a high quality copy. But with OEEX and the option to encode from the original source I am now in doubt. Are OE encoded songs being encoded FROM a lossy codec file of the song TO another lossy codec file? If so, the music I have been downloading here isn't as high quality as I originally thought.

Hmmm.... is mp3 lame @ 384 perhaps 24-bit? in that case might it really be equivelent to mp3 lame @256kbps 16-bit?

It is mad that give the option of rendering the mp3 file in 24 bits, but (there always is a but), mp3 is really 16 bit, it is debatable what extra comes from those 24 bits.

Freeform is a higher bitrate of mp3, that is not part of the ISO standard, I have got myself a 384 Kbps so I will see what can be done (when I get chance).

i tried the winamp input adapter but it didn't work. i followed the instructions for installing the adapter as well as copying over the desired winamp plugin. in the dBpowerAMP config panel it showed the winamp adapter but didn't show any file types associated with it. so i copied over a different winamp plugin to verify that i was doing it right; and, after copying a diff plugin and checking the config screen again the new file type was showing up.
so, it seems that the mad plugin is not compatible with the winamp adapter.

Go here,http://www.underbit.com/products/mad/#using, and you will find a
list of apps. that use MAD and will handle 384 kbps files.
