Is it possible to use the Quicktime encoder to create .m4a files without purchasing and registering Quicktime? (Yes, I'm cheap.) Perhaps establishing a connection through iTunes could do this? I know that on the Macintosh, the program OVOLAB - AAChoo can access the Quicktime encoder using an unregistered version of Quicktime, so it seems that this would be feasible.

Apple just released a Software Development Kit for iTunes, which might help Spoon out with this work:

COM is the Microsoft technology, similar to AppleScript on Mac OS, that allows programmatic control of iTunes from languages like JScript, Visual Basic®, C#®, and C++.
