The 'compilation' button lets you select a track offset number, which is excellent for combining a multi-CD set into a single 'virtual' album, and yet have all the tracks sequentially numbered with no duplicates.
First of all, however, that feature should be implemented with a spin control, and not the long list of numbers that currently appears.
Second, negative track offsets should be allowed. Suppose I want to extract tracks 17, 18 and 19 from a CD to create a standalone virtual... and as I do so, I want them to be known as tracks 1, 2 and 3. I need a track offset of -16... which I can't currently do.
Third, amazing as it might seem, but track offsets of more than 99 are sometimes needed (think of mergingthe entire 4 operas of Wagner's Ring Cycle into a single compilation).
