    Got an idea for MMC

    Ok it's probably been discussed and debated before, but I can't find any thread related to it.

    Anyway, instead of the textbox and the next button for searches through the MMC (which works rather well!) it would be nice to have a filter system going on. Like say you put a textbox for each "searchable" column, and then, MMC just filters itself as you type. Anything that doesn't fit what you are typing gets hidden for the list, and it shows only matches. It could also be configured for full substring search (so that if I type "Ame" well the song "An American In Paris" would show).

    That's what they use on my DVD cataloguing software (DVDProfiler for anyone interested to know) and it works well, that is, when I can't use the UPC code entry and have to enter DVD by it's title.

    I know you have a big overhaul planned for Amp/MMC and all, but I think the filter thing could be integrated and would be really nice!

      that could be interesting... maybe just one textbox still (with atrist, ablum track) and showing just the filtered items

          ..a bit like iTunes does it? the thought had crossed my mind, although I am in 2 minds which is the best.

              I wouldn't know if it's like iTunes.. never even installed it on my computer, let alone use it! I just saw it in DVDProfiler and thought it was a good idea because often, I look for songs by just typing an artists name, say Gershwin, and then I get all songs by Gershwin no matter who's the performer. Right now, I have to click next a LOT of times just to get to a specific songs whereas with a filter, I would only see songs that have Gershwin anywhere in it's tag

                  I know I am at risk at being thrown things at, but ...
                  ... I have seen this thingy in winamp (jump to function). Although winamp doesn't ussually work with so huge collections....

                  And I'm not sure either which one is beter... I guess it depends on the situation... This second way is for sure more expensive in computer resources...

                      I think thats an excellent idea, so the numer of tracks shown in MMC decreaces as you narrow the search down :D Then maybe you could reorder them by clicking on the artist or track tabs as well. But the only down point i can think of is with a collection of thousands of tracks it could be a bit slow, but I'm sure Spoon will get it working smoothly!

                          Well I know I'm coming back to the same example, well it's actually the only one I've seen that does it that way, but in DVDProfiler, there's 139,130 entries, and it still filters quite fast on my 1.1GHz celeron, and that's with full substring search. I guess with the performance of todays computers, I don't think cpu load should be that much of an issue.

                              There are some other issues concerning the file format, and the problems with storing/showing the results... programmer stuff

                              But in the end it would work, Spoon can create almost everyting, but it is always the matter of time...

                                  Ah good ol' programming.. No wonder I hate it! Took my college classes in computer science with programming as my specialty but boy do I HATE with a BIG H programming..

                                  Actually, I should be more specific, I hate programming with C++ or VB or Pascal, but I love programming databases like Oracle and MS/SQL, especially with Developper/2000 (which there probably are newer better versions now). Anyways, I'm out of my league here
