Could a new addition to Skin Designer be:
Rather than using seperate graphics for every button, be able to select an area on the skin background to use. Effects for mouse over and down could be colour invert, find contour ect.
What do you think?

It is a good idea (and I have seen similar in, for example, mv2 player), but it needs a bit reworking... color invert and find edges aren't easy to implement, and could rip a lot of proccesor time sometimes... :( Maybe 3 images (normal, roll over and pressed) with defined areas where the buttons are (co-ords)...
Needs a lot of work though, and I think Spoon doesn't have the time

If thats too hard, could some people from the forum get together and make an instant skin maker, like the ones for winamp.
eg. Skinamp
or Skinner Too.
(both the websites for these were down when i last checked, but there should be mirrors somewhere)

It probabbly comes down to the graphics program used to create the skin images before loading them into Skin Designer.

Could just one button be used for each function eg. The button is enlarged slightly from normal for mouse-over, and shrunk slightly for mouse-down.

For winamp is another story... the winamp skins were all the same size, with the buttons in the same places - so it wasn't hard to make a prog that will just cut pictures in the tight positions... dap is free form - so anything simpler than the Skin designer would loose functions :(

It could have pre-assigned buttons that you could drag onto a picture background.

Well that is how you work in the skin designer (just with more power) ... read Narlers tutorial - skin designer is not dificult to use - and you can resize the images manualy - maybe using some batch program - get all of the buttons and resize them at the same time - if you don't have any try IrfanView - it is good and free (search the web for it - I'm not sure of the adress)
