    Tagging Codec

    Spoon,

    Is there are way to override the existing tags withthe {Tag from Filename] codec?

    If not, would it be possible to as a check box (boolean of some kind) to indicate that the existing tag should be overwritten by the File Info.

    That would be really nice for getting the hard drive files and MMC synchronized.

    Thanks!

    Only if those tag elements appear in the filename.

      I phrased the idea poorly.

      Currently, if my APE files already have tag values, I can correct them by updating MMC and rewriting. However, if I tag from File Name (after updating the directory structure), the portions of the tag that derive from the folder / file name are not updated.

      I don't want to wipe the entire tag, since that would trash the track number and genre.

      I'll try the new "Tag from Filename" and see if you anticipated this clarification.

        Currently there is no provision to remove unwanted tags elements, so for example if you had:

        Artist: xyz
        Title: 123
        DayOfWeek: 4

        then it is not possible to remove Dayofweek (all the Codecs are to be updated with enhanced tag handling, true Unicode, quick tag reading / writing and deleting ability).

          What I was wondering was if the current tag was Artist: xyz Title: 123 and
          I renamed the folder Artist: Xyz Band Title: First Album, and then I ran the Tagging From FileName Codec, would the Artist tag become "Xyz" and the Title "First Album". Currently, if a file has been tagged, the values are not updated to reflect the current filename data.

          It would be nice if the tags were updated to the current value, perhaps with an overwrite warning...

            In that case [Tag From Filename] will work.

              Just tried it again, and the File time stamp does not change, nor does the popup value.

              I used a right click on the file,
              chose "Convert to", then selected "Tag From FileName",
              confirmed the Tag Recognition mask fit the folder structure,
              "Preserve ID Tags" unchecked,
              "Delete source files after conversion",
              clicked "Convert",
              nothing happens except the window going away.

                Preserve ID Tags - try checking this.

                  I tried this without success.

                  I also copied the file to another folder, and used Monkeys Audio to delete the tag. The codec would not reconstruct it.

                    What tagging string are you using? for [tag from filename], also post the full path and filename of one of your audio files.

                      What I have been testing with is a "various artists" environment.

                      The full file name is "G:\DMH Music Various Artists\Bringing it All Back Home [Disc 1]\De Dannan; Humors of Galway.ape".

                      The tag mask is "[album]\[artist]; [track]".

                      The current tag values are:

                      Artist = "Various Artists"
                      Album = "Bringing it All Back Home (Disc 1)" note parens, not brackets
                      Title = "De Dannan: Humors of Galway"

                      What I was hoping to get was:

                      Artist = "De Dannan"
                      Album = "Bringing it All Back Home [Disc 1]"
                      Title = "Humors of Galway"

                      Its got to be something dumb that I have done, or something simple (if obscure) in the code.

                      I'm afraid that I am "over organizing" my drive, trying to categorize where things go on them in addition to where it is in MMC. I'm trying to manage what will be well over 14,000 tracks, and MMC allows me to see every tagging error I have made.

                      So, I rename folders and files (for my hard drive organization), and not having to do that again in MMC for tags would be very nice - just right click, and the corrections cascade. Then, either ask MMC to find stuff, or simply rebuild the whole collection.

                      So, "tag from filename" could be a major convenience and "time saver" for me, if it would overwrite my prior mistakes and "correct" them. And not overwrite the fields that it doesn't have the data for, such as track number.

                      Eventually I hope to retire my CD player in my stereo, and listen only to my dbPoweramp jukebox, with all of my collection at my fingertips - no more "Gee, I know that CD is here somewhere?". All without any loss of quality, thanks to Monkeys Audio and your software.

                          Spoon,

                          Works like a charm.....

                          Actually, that's not a surprise with Illustrate software,
                          its the bug that is the rare surprise!

                          Thanks for pursuing this nit in the midst of meatier challenges!
