    Illustrate's orphanware & R13

I'm a registered user. I sometimes recommend dbPoweramp to others who then become registered users. But when one friend started asking me about Vista & Aux Input, I had to re-evaluate my support.

When I recommend dbPoweramp, I do so because of the suite's modularity. One set of codecs gives you wide functionality- cd ripping, line-in encoding, cd-burning, etc. Or it did until R11.5. So I was happy recommending 11.5, and that's all I use.

Now Vista's supplanted XP, and R11.5 isn't supported on Vista- most will run with some workarounds, but with no guarantee, I can't recommend it for new systems.

Seems like R13 is a decision point. Either package up R11.5 as a separate XP-only package and make it clearer on the homepage that they won't work with the current CD ripper- or update Aux Input, Sveta, and DAP (dbPoweramp Audio Player) to use the new codecs. I prefer the latter- they don't need any new functionality, they just need to work with the newer dlls. I see that dBpoweramp CD Writer for R12 is in beta, that's a good sign. If the rest will follow, wonderful. Until I see them working, I'm considering them abandoned, and looking for alternatives. Even moderator LtData recommended an alternative, in http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=16004 ... there is demand ... excerpting from my friend's email "dB seem(ed) to be the go-to package, so it's hard to replace"

This isn't meant as a flame, it's a prod. I'm a long time supporter of dbPoweramp- if you have access to the old forums you can even find a post where I suggest & explain simultaneous ripping & encoding to spoon! I want this product to keep growing, or at least to stop giving false impressions of hope.

Each product page does not state it supports Vista, only dMC says its supports Vista. Also, each page has a "Compatibility with r12" link below the download link. Also, Codec Central does state to get codecs for old dMC versions, Sveta, dCW and dAP in Legacy Codec Central.

Also, to clarify, I recommended a Sveta alternative because the user had a new generation iPod which Sveta doesn't support in its current iteration.

Clearly it takes alot of time and work to build a good player. Adding support for the multitude of portable players is even more work. Spoon is a lone developer. My personal opinion is that focus should be on dMC, or more precisely the ripper. Though most people may be buying it for the music conversion feature, I don't know.

Its not my software, and I am not the developer, but I would humbly suggest that it may be best to add other developers to help with these other projects, or team with another group that already has strong projects in these other categories. Mediamonkey already offers a very nice player, library manager, burning engine and transfer to portable players. What it lacks are some of the features of the dMC ripper. This would allow the strengths to continue to improve while the other areas would be fixed as well.

I'm actually OK with dropping Sveta or the CD-Writer, at least, that's better than vaporware. In any case a bit after this thread started Spoon announced that those would join modern dbPowerAmp.

Still outstanding is the Aux Input, which encodes line-in. Its absence from recent releases baffles me somewhat- change the codec APIs, there's not much in the way of features for fiddling. That's the product that keeps me using an old dbPowerAmp.

(Also outstanding, but not orphanware, is the Windows Vista logo at the top of http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ - I PM'ed Lt Data about that. As Spoon noted "We have not tested Sveta with Vista," and the home page isn't clear about which products are Vista-certified and which ones aren't)

Apart from the old CD Writer (replaced in beta section) all programs are Vista compatible, I use dAP in Vista and Sveta (yesterday to upload to an ipod).
