I just installed this. While the "Configure dBpoweramp/Codecs tab" says I'm running "Release 3 (FDK v0.1.3)", the UI hasn't changed from Release 2.

Here is the contents of c:\Program Files\Illustrate\dBpoweramp\encoder\m4a FDK (AAC)\encoder. I don't see any "-m" in there anywhere...:

Hello Spoon,

I just wanted to stop by to say thank you for the variable bitrate option. I was hoping for this as it will save me some space on my microSD card as opposed to using 256kbps CBR.

I was also curious why the VBR option only allows for up to 224kbps? How come there is no 256kbps or 320kbps option? Not that I would likely need to use these as I can't tell a difference, but just wondering why they were left out. Maybe that could be the reason, "no one needs it," but just wanted to ask.

I am not sure, those values do not exist in the encoder.

The bit rate of files encoded by FDK-AAC in VBR ("-m5") mode is significantly less than using something like "afconvert -u vbrq 127...".

But that doesn't necessarily mean they don't sound as good or better. I would encourage anyone interested to encode for themselves and compare to other AAC encoders. For me, the jury is still out on FDK-AAC, but the files sound pretty good for their size!

Same here. I encoded some files to FDK-AAC at VBR 224kbps and thought they sounded pretty good on my Fiio X1.

The VBR mode, as implemented in the FDK library is a "True VBR" one, i.e. not restricted or constrained by bitrates. That slider is a quality setting, and VBR allows 5 qualities (from low to high if you will). The bitrates are simply average estimates to what is generally expected by that quality level to produce. In theory, the highest quality setting could produce files with higher overall bitrates than 192 kbps (which is the actual average for quality 5), if actually needed.
