Beta: mp4 Codec Beta 4

This is a 'mean' question I know, but its valid too I suppose..
How do you expect the quality of your encoder to progress? Hydrogenaudio's test showed FAAC (thats what you use/make, right?) as being eh, not the best codec out there for 64 and 128kbit CBR, and sure enough it's beta. Ogg took quite a while to even overtake MP3 in quality as well.
But I recently bought an ipod, I want to start encoding my music to AAC which is a monstrous task. Id love to use your program - it seems to be very userfriendly and hassle-free, however, if you suddenly 'plan to' make huge leaps in quality it would be a waste of my time if I had to recode everything again to get the most 'bang for the byte'.
So to recap: how do you expect the quality of your encoder to improve over the coming weeks/months/year? Do you recon it will close the gap with the commercial encoders, will it always tail behind, will it improve a lot Soon(tm) or are you only doing slight tweaks right now..
Mind you Im assuming the hydrogenaudio test was 'right' in its conclusions, maybe you disagree off the bat?Comment

Mp4 beta 2 just freezes and does nothing
When for the first time I've added the Mp4 plugin (for which I had to install a trial of Power pack) to DMC 9 and tried to test it - it reported an error and didn't convert anything.
Next time (after plugin's reinstall) I was able to get a 10% progress, but then it just freezed (no matter of the source song's type/length)!
I'm using a Windows 98 Second Edition (on an AMD Duron CPU) and don't think the reason is in my system as I don't have any problems with the other plugins.Comment

AACenc is in the community, I have no doubt that in time (as has happened with Lame) it will become king, although right now the best seems to be QuickTime.

The mp4 plugin shouldn't need the Power Pack. Anyhow have you tried leaving it at 10% for awhile? a few minutes.Comment

Spoon, big props.
beta's been working great. I've encoded some cds to 128k MP4 and they sound pretty good.
My only question is is there a way to output the files as *.m4a instead of *.mp4? My ipod will only recognize the files only after i rename them to that extension.
On a side note, when I transfered these files over to the ipod use the sveth player, everything works. the tagging is all there on my ipod.
But when i try transfering it using ephod, there is no tagging of the files.
what gives.
Also, is there any media player out there that can read the hidden tags of these files just like my ipod?Comment

The iPod can play a .mp4 file that is what Sveta writes. ephpod would have to be updated to recognize the tags within the mp4 files.

dBpowerAMP Audio Player
there must be something wrong with my system then, cause everytime i use Sveta to transfer .mp4 files it becomes a 1kb file in the ipod with the extension .mov.
i wonder if i unregistering the .mp4 files with quicktime would help.Comment

If you convert a Wave file to mp4 with dBpowerAMP at what point does it say it is a .mov file? After conversion? when it is uploaded to the iPod (with Sveta Explorer)?Comment

-the tagging works now after i unregistered .mp4 with quicktime.
>"ephpod would have to be updated to recognize the tags within the mp4 files. "
-how would i go into doing this. ephpod community users have written that ephpod is compatible with apple tags. are the taggin in these mp4 files not compatible with apple's?Comment
