I use AudioShell and another homebrew tool as shell extensions for looking at MP3, M4A, etc files on disk.
dbPA appears to stomp on the existing shell extensions even if I ask it to not provide any extensions (not a popup window nor as property sheet).
Try installing AudioShell http://www.softpointer.com/AudioShell.htm
and then add dbPA and see what happens. Conversely, AudioShell is well-behaved.
