The files play just fine now in MPC, haven't tried my iPod yet, will try that later today.

Just wondering: What code is the m4a AAC codec based on?
i.e. Apple, Nero, Coding Technologies, FAAC?

Nero Digital Audio's exe is used to do the encoding, I believe the decoding is done by FAAD.

What are people experience with non-itunes m4a files and iPods? I was having a lot of problems with VBR Lame MP3 files on my gen 3&4 ipods and am looking for an alternative.

Personally, I have been using dMC and the Codec Central version of m4a to rip my CDs to m4a and put them on my iPod with no problems at all.

Also no problems here. Nero AAC VBR (Q .65).

I converted few FLAC and MP3 files, both types with embedded cover art, to ALAC. Then I imported ALAC files into iTunes. Works like a breeze. Good work!

Well R6 still has the problem of converting flac to m4a (alac) with a fairly high bitrate and not being able to be playing on an iPod. They play fine in iTunes but not on the iPod once they are transfered over. So I guess for now I'm stuck with converting flac to wav, then importing to itunes and converting to alac. For some reason the previous version of dbpoweramp and the alac codec seemed to work just fine with the conversion from flac to alac.

So your ALAC files won't play on the iPod? If you remove all of the tags, does it play then?

There is still the issue of some ALAC files not playing on iPods, but it is not all.
