How do I convert a movie to audio?

I downloaded a comedy movie thinking it was a audio file to put on my iPod so how can I change it to be able to play on my iPod?

I've downloaded this one: dBpowerAMP Music Converter (dMC)
but when I go to convert it it doesnt show up in my downloaded folder.

dMC doesn't convert video files, except for some WMV files that it is able to pull the audio out of. Mabye try using VirtuaDub to re-encode the audio of your file: http://www.virtualdub.org/.

      See here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=5361

You will find out the extension of your file that way, so you'll have a better idea what you're dealing with.

If you cannot extract the soundtrack as a separate audio file, then you can always use dMC Auxiliary Input to record the audio through the soundcard, as the movie plays in the player you are using.

If your movie is an mpg file, and if its soundtrack is in mp3 format, then you might be able to convert it directly to any other audio type.

For .wmv (Windows Media Video) files, as LtData said the conversion is straightforward, as the soundtrack will be in .wma format, as long as you install the Windows Media codecs.

For .mp4 video files you will probably also be able to convert the audio as long as you have the decoding codec for it.

Thanks, I tried that but when I went to run the file in the program I get an error saying Microsoft owns a patent on the ASF file format and thus third part programs can't extract data.

        Does this mean I'm screwed?

Aha it is a Windows Media file, .asf is the same as .wmv or .wma .

Install the WIndows Media codecs from codec central and try again.

Doesn't s/he need the ACM codecs for ASF? VirtualDub is all about ACM when it comes to audio.
