Can anyone help me sort a collection of random music files? Various questions...

    Hi all

For quite a while now I have been ripping my CD collection using dBpoweramp 14.4. When I rip I encode twice, creating one FLAC and one mp3 album. All’s going well with that…

But I also have a fairly large library of stuff I have downloaded, recorded, etc etc. (let’s call that the random collection) and I now want to integrate this into the FLAC and mp3 libraries (from ripped CDs). The random collection is a mixture of FLACs, and mp3s of various quality. I want each album to end up in both the main/parent FLAC and mp3 libraries (created form the rips), even if that means having duplications. All FLACs and high quality mp3s will need to be converted to mp3 –v4 for the mp3 folder. Lower quality mp3s won’t need converting, but I still want a copy in both parent directories. Hope that makes sense!

I have finished tagging all of the audio in the random collection, but there’s more work to be done and I’m a bit stuck on how best to go about it. I wondered whether any kind souls might be able to help with any of the points below. Even if you can only answer one or two it would be a massive help.

    1. I want to change all of the folder and filenames in the random collection so that they match the same format as the rips I’ve done. I have a naming “script” (Output Location – Dynamic) which I use in DBPA when ripping, if that would help?

    2. I use ReplayGain and so want to apply this to all of the files (to the same spec/settings as the rips I’ve done). How?

    3. When ripping CDs, DBPA replaces characters that are restricted in Windows to ones that are allowed. I’m guessing I’ll need to do this for the random collection too… I’m just not sure how.

    4. I’ve downloaded artwork for the random collection but at the moment all the jpegs are sat in one folder. I don’t embed artwork; I just have a “cover”.jpg in each album folder. Will I have to sort this manually for every album or is there a way to do it quickly and easily?

    5. When I rip CDs, there are two different features that I have for the mp3s only. A) I have the track number added to the start of each song title tag. B) I have the artwork reduced to 320 x 320 (and no larger than 50kb). How can I get this done?

    6. Some tracks have iTunes tags such as iTunes_CDDB_IDs, iTunNORM, iTunSMPB (there may be more…). Do I need to get rid of them, and if so - how (preferably all in one go)? I’m just worried that they might cause conflicts or problems.

Sorry for the length of the post and the amount of questions. Like I said above, any help would be fantastic, no matter how little.

    Cheers

    Max

PS – I’m not sure if I will need to use Music Converter, Batch Converter, or something else. So I have put this in the “How Do I?” forum, but please move if it’s better placed elsewhere.

      Hi all

I've replied to this over on Hydrogen Audio (see link in Spoon's post above). I'm guessing there are people who might be members here but not there, so thought I'd update here as well in case anyone from this forum can help.

In essence, what I'm asking over there is:

      - RE: Question 4. How will the ID Tag Update utility know which artwork jpeg belongs in which folder? What do I need to do exactly?

      - I've downloaded the codecs I'll need to use (as well as some others that looked like they could be helpful), but can anyone remind me what I have to do with them to install them? It's been a long while since I last did it....

      Many thanks

Great - thanks. Still a bit unclear, so have replied over there. If you could get back to me on that when you get a moment that would be fantastic. Many thanks

In the meantime, can anyone over here please remind me how to install a utility codec once it has been downloaded. I've totally forgotten!

          Cheers

Double click on the downloaded file. It will then go through the install procedure...

              Hi garym

Nice to hear from you; it's been a while

You're probably thinking I'm a right plonker for having to ask! But I have an excuse... The first one I tried to do that with a day or two ago would not work. It was the Length Split codec, and when I double clicked it said "This installation is corrupted, please obtain a new copy". I didn't read it closely enough and also foolishly did not try any of the others (thinking I was doing something wrong).

Anyways, the others have installed fine, so thanks for that. I tried re-downloading Length_Split but I'm getting the same error. Anyone know what's up with that?

Also, I did not realise but I actually have ID Tag Update installed already. The installer I already have is timestamped 06 Jan 2014, whereas the one I've just recently downloaded is timestamped 07 Dec 2016. So is the one I've downloaded newer and if so should I replace/re-install/overwrite?

Likewise with ReplayGain, which has similar date differences. Whatsmore, I think my existing RG is Version 3 whereas I see the newest is V5. Should I upgrade? And would it matter that I am still using R14.4 of DBPA?

              Many thanks

              Max

Yes, upgrade to the newest versions. Not sure what's wrong with the one corrupted. I haven't installed it.

you should be able to run the dbpa configuration program and it will tell you if there are updates available for you.

OK, will do. Do you think I need to uninstall the older codecs first? Or will running the new installers simply update them without having to do anything else?

Maybe Spoon can say whether there's a problem with that one. Or it could be my system...?

Thanks, I'll check that out. I don't use the configuration program as much as I should. I tend to forget it's there.

                  Many thanks for the help.

I think it will ask if ok to uninstall old version when you run the install program. It will be obvious.

Indeed it was obvious and straight forward. RG codec updated from v3 to v5. Thanks for the help

I don't think it is worth updating the ID Tag Update codec because my existing and the new versions are both v.4. The only difference is the timestamp. Furthermore, I've checked the configuration app and it isn't telling me there that the ID Tag Update codec has an update. So unless anyone here tells me otherwise I'll leave that one as is. Sound like a plan?

Would also be good to get confirmation as to whether Length_Split is broken, or if I'm doing something wrong...

                      Cheers

Yep. Good plan. You might want to create a new thread on the broken codec install.

Good thinking... So I've just created a new thread for Length_Split and should hopefully find out what the problem is with that.

I just noticed that the RG codec updated both the encoder AND the DSP. Not that it is a problem. Just wasn't what I expected.

I also just noticed that there is an ID Tag Update codec and an ID Tag Processing DSP. Are they completely different?

                          Cheers
