Why Are My Rips Only Saving Metadata?

Hi-
I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit) on a laptop with a Nimbie. I bought DBPA Reference and installed Batch Ripper and the Nimbie Driver V5. I followed Spoon's settings guide and got started ripping my 1000+ CD collection to FLAC. I checked that the path on my laptop was correct, file names were good, the metadata was correct, and the process seemed to be working just fine. Each rip was taking between 2 and 3 minutes with no error messages. I went back to check playback on a few of the files by downloading and running VLC Player. The files won't play and only seem to only contain the metadata, not the audio. I've scoured the forums and help and can't figure out what happened or how to fix the problem. What am I missing? have you tried the files on another player (e.g., Foobar2000). What is the size of a typical track file? A typical 3 to 5 minute song should be between 20 and 40MB in size. What do your ripping logs say. Look at the log for one of the albums (should be a .txt file within the album sudirectory.

something is wrong. A FLAC file would be MUCH larger than 120-140kb, even if only a few seconds long. What about the ripping log created by dbpoweramp on one of these albums? Can you post that here? Here's an example:

the log is a *.txt file created in the same directory as your album tracks are located. There is a setting in ripper settings to tell dbpa to create the log and how "complete" you want it to be. I'm away from my computer that runs dbpa, so can't point you to the exact location of this setting. Somewhere in ripper settings/options.

The info you posted does suggest that the tracks were ripped and are accurate. So I suspect that there is something going on with regard to where the rips are being written. What is the destination of your files? A local HDD, a NAS, or ????.

As you are running batch ripper, configure it to open the settings for CD Ripper and make sure the DSP section in CD ripper is clear of any effects.

I launched Batch Ripper Configuration and I don't see where to configure it to open CD Ripper, nor do I see that option with Batch Ripper open. Can you point me in the right direction?
When I launch CD Ripper from the Start Menu, I do see that it has retained the recommended DSP settings (ReplayGain & HDCD) that I read in the audio ripping set-up guide. Is that not how I was supposed to set it up? I followed the guide to the letter, or so I thought.... Thanks for your help figuring this out.

p.s. as an aside, you should investigate the use of the HDCD DSP a bit more before ripping everything. See this long thread:

In my own case, I do NOT rip using HDCD DSP, as if I do and the disk is HDCD, the resulting rip will not be bit perfect, as noted in the above thread. I'd recommend creating a bit perfect rip, and if desired then creating *another* FLAC copy with the HDCD DSP.

OK, opened Batch Ripper, clicked "edit" next to profile, which opens up CD Ripper. I didn't see an option to configure Batch Ripper to open the settings for CD Ripper. With CD Ripper open, I did see that the DSP settings are ReplayGain & HDCD, as I set them up according to the guide. I cleared both of those settings out and tried a batch rip. This time it seems to have worked. The files are playable and the appropriate size.
I slavishly followed the setup guide, but those recommended settings don't work if you are using Batch Ripper with CD Ripper?
