    Burning FLAC Files (HDCD) to CD-R

    Hello everyone!

    Looking at downloading some higher bit audio for my sound system. I have a HDCD capable cd player and I want to know if dBpoweramp can burn a HDCD FLAC to an audio cd-r with HDCD encoded? Looked for answers here on the forums but couldn't find anything on that. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

    If you rip to lossless, then burn from lossless, the hdcd is preserved.

      Great, so your saying that dBpoweramp can rip and burn lossless to a cd-r? That is what I am asking. The answer is a little vague so that is why I want a bit of clarification before I buy dBpoweramp.

      Also, can I download other HD FLAC's and convert them to HDCD using dBpoweramp?

          I think you may be confusing HD flacs with HDCDs. HD flacs are a higher resolution (24-bit, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz etc.) than standard redbook audio CDs and HDCDs which are 16-bit, 44.1kHz.

          You can convert Hi-Res flacs to a lower bit depth and sample rate e.g. 16-bit, 44.1kHz and burn to redbook audio CD, but this does not make it an HDCD.

          I suggest you research HDCD on the internet, to get a better understanding of the format.

            Actually it is a 20bit sample over a 16bit digital audio signal. It is, in fact, an encoded file, much like FLAC or SACD, ect. The format my CD player can read so to speak. But converting a 24bit 96khz format (like FLAC) to a lossless WAVE file should do the trick. Since my CD player can recognize a 24bit 96khz file (it can upsample as well), the solution would be software that can convert any 24bit 96khz file to a lossless WAVE file for CD playback that my CD player can read. Again a question, "can dBpoweramp rip a 24bit 96khz file (like a FLAC) to a WAVE file (lossless) so my CD player can read it?"

              When using dBpoweramp to rip an HDCD audio CD to flac, the resulting flacs can be either 16-bit or 20-bit (if using the dBpoweramp HDCD DSP). However, HDCD audio CDs are 44.1kHz, 16-bit.

              I would check the formats your CD player can play. It is possible it can play flac files, so the 24-bit 96kHz flac to wav conversion may not be necessary. dBpoweramp CAN convert 24-bit 96kHz flacs to wav.

                Thanks for the info. It sounds like it may or may not be able to play the files as FLACs. My CD player does not specify. But it can play 24bit 96khz as long as it can read that file. It sounds like I need to experiment a bit. Maybe I wont need to convert to a WAVE file after all. Thanks again.
