Selecting an alternative CD drive

How do I select an alternative CD drive? The default (and only) CD drive on my PC won't read some CDs which load perfectly fine on my son's laptop. I can see the CD drive on my son's laptop from my PC but the only CD drive available for selection on the CD Ripper application is the default CD drive on my PC. Is there any way of getting the CD Ripper app to see an external CD drive (i.e. on my son's laptop)?

It is not possible to rip using drives shared over a network, direct access to the drive is required.

Thanks for the update. If I buy an external USB CD drive and plug it into the PC where I have dbpoweramp installed, will I be able to see CDs on that?
