For the record, I have been using the [trial] program for a couple of days. Generally, I've found the learning curve a bit steep, but doable. There are features I'm starting to like — various encoding options, multiple meta lookups, multi-core encoding — but one problem prevents me from committing further with it...
The CDs I'm ripping are being done locally while they're being saved/stored on a NAS box. Of course, from there I want to play those files on other devices, namely my XBox 360, PS3 and my TiVos. All are being encoded into lossless compression formats, as I've decided to move beyond mp3s, especially if I decide to burn these back onto CDs sometime later.
The thing is, at best, the albums and tracks do show up when I look for them on the other devices, but the files will not play. At worst, I get jack squat: to them, it's as if they didn't exist. I am highly confident that my network setup is right, as I am able to rip the tracks on the same CDs using a different media player and its included Fraunhofer HE-AAC 3.2.2 encoder. So somewhere along the way, I've screwed up my setup, whether it be the program itself or the encoding that's a part of it.
With all that established, to what lossless format should I encode my CDs to so that they can play on these devices without a problem? And if there is any, what specific settings should I use? (Keep it simple: I am a newcomer to this program.)
Additionally, I do have access to a portable DVD/Laptop drive that I can connect via USB to my NAS. Would I be better off using that and the RipNAS Essentials add-on, rather than ripping it locally and then transferring it?
I was referred to the program by a good friend of mine who spoke highly of both it and the community that supports it. And in the days since I've first used it, I can understand why he made the recommendation.
Thanks in advance.
