Keeping Tags when converting to FLAC

    G'day,

Ages ago I ripped all of my CD's using PA into Monkey's Audio for archiving purposes. More recently I purchased new computer equipment for me and also a HTPC for the theatre and decided that (rightly or wrongly) I would use Windows 7 Media centre for my media player. As Win7MC did not support playing Monkeys audio files I converted all of those files to WMA lossless. All good so far. I have over the years purchased more CD's, ripped them all to WMA lossless and where necessary cleaned up any tags using Mp3Tag. Still all good.

So now I want to buy a Sonos system, however Sonos does not support WMA lossless, so I need to convert either to WAV format or to FLAC, and I am carrying out trials on each, however I believe that I will end up going with FLAC even though it is a bit dodgy in Win7MC.

My problem with FLAC, and indeed my questions are

    1) When I use PA to convert from wma lossless to FLAC seemingly all of the tag information is lost. By example, when I hover over a wma folder in explorer, there is a load of information shown including the accurate rip result, the type of file etc etc, however the FLAC file shows basically none of this information

    2) Also in windows explorer, the track number, album artist, album name and a whole bunch of other information can be displayed for the wma file but not for the FLAC file.

Is there a tick box that I am missing when I am converting from wma lossless to FLAC or is this a known thing?

I also seem to have lost the ability to show cover art in Win7MC if I use FLAC files. Bugger why is this so hard?

I know that I can use VLC player for this, but I really like the way that Win7MC groups all of the albums together by artist and I have not been able to replicate this with VLC.

NB: If I 'open' the FLAC files in Mp3Tag all of the information, including the cover art is shown - so why can it not be displayed in Win explorer and why has all of the other tag information gone?

    Thanks

    Jason

    Install Audio Info from:

and convert a WMA file to 'Audio Info' (enable the extensive information option), do the same for one of your FLAC files. Post the results here.

      Thanks Spoon.

Have done that for the a wma file and then for the same song after it was converted to FLAC using PA.

However I cant post attachments (Not enough posts maybe?)

The wma output and the FLAC file seem to show the same info

      Can I email them somewhere?

      Cheers

If WMA Flac show the same then the FLAC files are correctly tagged.

dBpoweramp should popup information for FLAC files and tag editing for Explorer, reinstall dbpoweramp to make sure nothing else has taken over these roles.

Re: Keeping Tags when converting to FLAC

The only difference that I can see in the two audio info outputs is that the wma output says that the tags are WMA ID Tag and the FLAC output says ID Tag Vorbis comments.

            Would this impact in anything?

Also, I do not have the original PA download so to uninstall and reinstall do I need to purchase it again?

            Thanks

Actually I found the registered download facility and reinstalled PA and all of the tag information on the FLAC files is now showing up.

Now I just need to figure out how I can get Win7 MC to play a bit nicer with the FLAC files!

              Cheers

No, FLAC stores its internal tags using a different format.

Re: Keeping Tags when converting to FLAC

Seems to be the right place to ask: does the converter transfer all metadata supported by source format (with exception of technical info like encoding format tool etc.?) Artwork, cuesheets and all?

Reason why I ask is that foobar2000 does not transfer art.

Depends on what is stored in the tags, tags such as multiple languages side by side: no, synchronzied lyrics: no, embedded cue sheets: no

                        and possibly others.

Re: Keeping Tags when converting to FLAC

On Saturday I upgraded to ver 15 and made my first attempt to convert wav to flac.
There are two CDs (both Dire Straits) and I created a new folder called FLAC Music where I plan to keep flac files. When conversion was over, there was a sub folder named Dire Straits containing all the songs from both albums presented as a single album without artwork or separate titles.
What am I doing wrong? I do not need all the data available (if that would make things more complicated). Name of the artist with name of the album and tracks would be just fine as long as the procedure is simple.
Can I do the conversion as a whole album using Batch Converter or is it better to select each song using DB converter?
                          Thanks!

First check the wave files have ID tags, select a wave files >> right click >> Edit ID Tags

                            are any tags shown?

Yes, the tags are showing and the artist, album, title, track, track* and title, record label, genre, year are all there (including the album cover).
