How do I get multiple CPUs to encode faster

Lately the CD ripper has been behaving poorly. Usually a CD takes 2.5 minutes to rip to FLAC; one CPU ripping the next song while another CPU is encoding the previous song. It seems (I don't know for sure) that since I upgraded to Ref14 that the ripping occurs likes this. I have 4 CPUs so the first 4 songs are ripped. Then the software pauses from 15sec to 60 secs and then starts encoding the first ripped song. This encoding is taking much longer than usual. After the first song is encoded, the next song is ripped, the software pauses, and then the next ripped song is encoded. It is now taking about 10 minutes to rip a cd.
Is there a setting that I am missing. I have ripped over 2000 cds with CD ripper and only lately have I had this problem. Rebooting the computer has no affect.

    Thanks,
    Cary
