Update *only* metadata, without re-encoding?

I tried searching around the forums but didn't have much luck. Here's what I'm trying to do:

-I have a boatload of FLACs in a directory
-I batch convert these to MP3 with dBpoweramp (I have 12.4 reference)
-I drag them into iTunes for use on my iPod

From time to time in this workflow, I will notice that I screwed something up with the tagging.

Ideally, what I would like to do is:
-re-tag the FLACs (i.e. fix the root cause of the problem)
-have dBpoweramp *just* update the metadata in the associated MP3s.
-drag the updated MP3s to iTunes to update things there (come to think of it, I'm not sure how smart iTunes would be if I did that...)

Basically, this would allow me to avoid:
a) re-encoding the FLACs to MP3 OR
b) retagging the MP3s directly the same way I updated the FLAC tags.

Neither a) or b) is that bad for a few tracks here and there, but sometimes there are a lot of them.

I thought the "Update ID Tag Codec" might do the trick, but if I understand it properly, it won't do what I'm looking for.

I can think of a few reasons this would be really complicated to implement, and figure I am dreaming, but thought I would ask anyway.

You could use windows explorer to search for flac files which have been modified, say in the last week, convert only those to mp3 overwriting.
