Is the account set to limited rights? or is the account an administrator account?

I am pretty sure that installing to thumb drive will not affect your ripping permissions as these specific windows permissions that are not really changable without admin access. (ie if your trying to rip on a work computer where you don't have admin rights)

Note that if you are going for "portable" dMC, dMC makes heavy use of the registry to store settings.

Limited user accounts are not allowed to access the cd drive to rip (unless the limited ripping option is selected, which uses Windows methods). Vista does not have this limitation.

Installing is not the problem, installers are elevated to Administrator if needed, your account would have to be Administrator to use anything other than Windows Internal.
