How Do I rip to AAC (Non Nero...possible?)

I use Itunes (Shudder...sorta) and I can't figure out how to get it (DBA CD ripper) to rip AAC files compatible with Itunes, like I have no clue as to what to do...yes I am very noobular...sorry, I am trying to get these AAC's onto my 5.5G ipod and so am also wondering if I can use HE AAC...

According to Wikipedia, neither iTunes nor the iPod support HE AAC, so just rip to normal m4a files and you should be fine.
