    HDCD / Dolby ProLogic ripping

i have a few Audio-CDs having the HDCD logo (20bit data encoded in a 16bit stream - look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_De...atible_Digital) and some containing tracks mixed in Dolby ProLogic (example: http://www.ayreon.com/starone/so_albums.html).
is it possible to rip these formats and how ?
i'd like to rip to a lossless - in case of HDCD decoded to 20bit or 24bit - audio file containing all channels (6 for Dolby PL)

As far as I know, nothing can rip the full sudo 20 bits.

rip HDCD 16-bit WAV files with EAC

      a software HDCD Decoder :-)
i'll give it a try this evening

Re: HDCD / Dolby ProLogic ripping

        it works !

        1) ripping to 16bit wav with dbPoweramp CD Ripper
        2) converting to 24bit wav (containing the REAL 20bit HDCD) with HDCD.exe

current version (r185 17.09.2007) can be found here

is there a way to do this during ripping (maybe using CLI codec) ?

here are the command line ptions of HDCD.exe

        Usage: hdcd [-h] [-o output | -c | -a] [-x] [-i] [-r] [-s] [--] file
Upconvert a 16 bit wav file to 24 bit using HDCD encoding if present

        Options:
        -h display usage information
-o output output to the specified file
        -c output to stdout (Default)
        -a suppress output
-x return a non-zero exit code if HDCD
        encoding wasn't detected.
-i identify HDCD. Only scans the first 750
frames or until HDCD encoding is
        detected. Implies -a -x.
-r treat input as 2ch, 16 bit raw PCM and
and write output as 2ch, 24 bit raw PCM.
-s only write warnings and errors to stderr
-- allow file to start with '-'
file input file. Defaults to stdin.

Rip to wave and use the DSP effect Run External:

          After Conversion

          "c:\apath\hdcd.exe" [outfile]

              HDCD ripping

I recently downloaded an HDCD-encoded album (in FLAC). Upon playing the uncompressed wave in WMP, I could see the HDCD logo at the bottom of the player. That clearly means that FLAC was able to retain the HDCD signal perfectly.

However, as I usually do, I ripped that WAVE into separate WMA lossless tracks for my library. But upon playing these tracks, I do not see the HDCD logo anymore. Does that mean:

WMA lossless is not actually a lossless encoder, and therefore inferior to FLAC?
              OR
I need to tweak my settings for the WMA lossless encoder [I am currently using 44.1/24 combination].

I don't currently have a player that could play FLACs, so I am not sure how different the two formats sound.

It would be great if anyone could throw some light on how to rip an HDCD-encoded disc perfectly.

              Thanks.

                Re: HDCD ripping

Did you have any dsp effects enabled? IIRC, some of these encode-higher-quality-in-16-bit methods store important information in the least significant bits (LSBs). HDCD might store data that way. If so, applying any dsp effects will surely destroy that information.

There may be other settings in the general dbpoweramp configuration settings that apply.

EDIT: If I read the thread above correctly, you have to use the HDCD.exe external tool to first convert to 24-bit WAV files. Then you can convert those to whatever lossless formats support 24-bit storage and playback. However, at that point, you won't see the HDCD logo because that only applies to 16-bit encoded versions, though you will be getting the same exact audio output when you play back the 24-bit conversions.

I rip to FLAC, with the HDCD DSP enabled. Does that mean -- precisely -- that the HDCD-decoded tracks are 24-bit FLAC files? What if some CD has only some, but not all, tracks HDCD-flagged?

HDCD works on tracks, not discs and is safe to use on mixes of HDCD and non HDCD.

I have only ripped a few HDCD discs. Of the ones I have ripped only some tracks have been identified as HDCD, but all the tracks on the discs have ripped to 24bit.

I managed to find four CDs with "partial HDCD use". Results are inconsistent:

                        - On two CDs, only the last of the tracks was flagged HDCD. For one of these CDs, all tracks were 24 bit, but for the other only the last (the HDCD) track was 24 bit.

                        - On one CD, all but the first were flagged HDCD. But all were 24 bit.

                        - On one CD, all but the last were flagged HDCD, but all were 24 bit. However, this one had a HTOA (marked HDCD), and the R13Beta had a naming bug for HTOAs.

Two more (comps) -- single track in the middle of the CD flagged as HDCD, seems to work by track as Spoon describes.
