How do I convert .wav to midi file

In the past, I have always converted midi files to .wav files to use on a movie DVD. Now I want to convert a .wav file to a midi to use on a web page.
When I go to Aux.Input and click to right of "Record to", my only choices are 1. MP3(Lame), 2. Test Conversion, 3. Wave
    Help?
    Thanks in advance

I don't think there is any reliable way to convert TO midi.

Midi is not a waveform codec, it's a series of commands/events that tell a midi device to play specific samples etc.

      Oh phooey!
Well, is there a file type that I CAN convert the wav file to that will be at least somewhat smaller? This particular wav file is 55,585kb and would use up all of my web space.
      Thanks for any suggestions

mp3, wma, aac all should be able to shrink that down to 5 megs or less (figuring ~10 to 1 reduction), even smaller if you don't care too much about quality.

I'd recommend trying them all and listening to them and comparing their file sizes to find one that suites your needs.

Thanks - I'll try the MP3. I assume that "MP3(Lame)" choice is the same as plain old MP3?

            Yes, MP3(LAME) makes normal MP3s.

You might also try a compressed WAV, choosing MPEG Layer 3 and then various bitrates.

Re: How do I convert .wav to midi file

Well, I converted it to MP3 which reduced it down to 6764kb. It was about 75% uploaded to the web space when message flashed that I had exceeded my web space. So it looks like I just need to reduce it a little bit more. I don't understand about bitrates. Would a compressed wav shrink it more than the MP3? And how does one compress a wav file?
              Thanks for your help.

PS: Quality is not terribly important for this one

if quality is not too important, try lame @ v-6 thru v-9 to find the right size/quality level that is acceptable for your needs.

Thank you both so very much. I set the compression settings to 96Kb and got the file size down to 3405, which would fit on my web page.
                  Thank goodness for this forum.
