how to convert video (mpeg) to mpeg4 format

I am new to this converting bizness. I purchased a Archos AV700 and it uses mpeg4. I have an mpeg file on my pc but it wont take it as it says its not the right format. I have WMA10 on my xp. so what do i need to do?
