Can DB rip a Cd directly to Apple lossless?

Hi there,


I have been looking for an easy way to convert my FLAC files to apple lossless without having to waste time coding them to WAV.

In my research, I was pointed to this software.

It looks good, and I'm looking forward to using it:

However, I do have one important question:

Is it possible to tell the program to rip the files from a CD directly to Apple Lossless, rathter than putting them on the hard drive in WAV format?

This would be especially helpful, since the Itunes software takes a long time to import CD tracks, and then convert them over to the Ipod in apple lossless format.

I've searched the forum, and cannot find the answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can rip an audio cd to any format for which you have the codec.

If you have a cd of FLAC files, that's a data cd, you will simply convert them to whatever other format you have the codec for.

All codecs can be downloaded from Codec Central and installed once you have the dBpowerAMP Music Converter installed.

The Apple lossless encoding codec is available at Codec Central in the .mp4 group.

Wow, that was a fast response! Merci! This sort of covers the question from all angles. I was afraid I wasnt' being clear enough in my post.

This sounds perfect for me, since I can not only take my FLAC files and directly convert them to apple lossless (without losing tags), but direclty convert an audio CD to the apple file format and import into the itunes/ipod. This will save oodles of time!

Just make sure you read carefully the informaiton on all the different mp4 codecs and pick the right one.

I think your ipod can also play mp3 files, not only apple lossless ones.

Also, for dMC to convert to Apple Lossless you have to have iTunes installed.

I was hoping to use this software to hasten the ripping process with CDs, because Itunes takes six or seven minutes per CD to import and then convert over. In other words, I was hoping to have to not choose the 'encode to apple lossless' function in itunes.

So, essentially I will still have to use the Itunes program to convert them to apple lossless?

dMC needs part of iTunes to encode to Apple Lossless. But I do not think it relies solely upon iTunes to do this. I haven't messed with iTunes and so i also have not messed with Apple Losless. However, I would expect that dMC would not convert more slowly than what you describe.

So I would encourage you to check it out and let us know what you find. Or, perhaps, another user who does work with Apple Lossless might share their experience with speed of ripping to Apple Lossless.

I does rely on iTunes, it is quite quick.

I have a dbpoweramp native apple lossless codec (without iTunes) but the apple lossless files it creates only work in iTunes (and not on an iPod), so have not released.

Would I be correct then that my FLACs would have the same Apple lossless problem?

Perhaps I could use your software to convert FLAC to WAV, and then convert in Itunes. Unfortunately, it still sounds like I would lose all my tags that way. Your program sounds much faster at converting FLAC to wave then MKW for .shn and Bit Tornado for FLAC, however.

Christina, can you please actually use dMC to convert from flac directly to apple lossless, and then list out the steps that you used?

Here are the steps that I did to (unsuccessfully) try to use dMC to convert from flac directly to apple lossless.

(1.) Install dMC.
(2.) Download and install the "flac codec" from here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-flac.htm
(3.) Download and install the "m4a, mp4 Codec" and the "iTunes Encoder" from here: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-mp4.htm
(4.) Download and install iTunes.
(5.) Open iTunes, select Edit, Preferences from the main menu. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on the Importing sub-tab. Select Apple Lossless Encoder in the Import Using drop-down. Click Okay and close iTunes.
(6.) Run dMC converter. Select the source file of type flac. Choose "m4a (iTunes) in the Converting File To dropdown. Click the Convert button.

Seems that this will work, but the problem is that dMC resets iTunes to import using the AAC encoder!

Sorry, I don't have itunes, nor an ipod. Wasn't planning to get either.

I have converted a flac file to m4a (FAAC CLI) - but not sure if that's the one you need for your ipod, probably not since you're having problems. For me it worked straight away, normal conversion, nothing special.

I thought there were 2 conversion options presented (when using the iTunes dBpowerAMP encoder) - one aac the other lossless.

Just came across this thread as well because I am interested in converting some WMA Lossless Files to Apple lossless to move to our PowerMac G5.

I am picky about what software is installed on the Windows PC that has the WMA lossless files, so I really really don't want to install iTunes. The apple lossless files would not be transferred to an iPod in the lossless format (we would use a lossy compression for that), but as these are our own personal recordings of our music, we would want them on the Mac for editing in a lossless compressed format...

Worst case scenario I suppose we could decode all of them to WAV and then move over to the Mac and use the Mac itself to encode to apple lossless... But this would be quite a task considering our recordings library is about ~200 gigs in WMA Lossless currently.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to ease this process, that would be greaty appreciated.

We cannot release a faulty encoder, but rest assured it is being worked on.
