    ipods and the rest

I'm in the market for a new mp3 player. I'm trying to keep away from the ipod, for a variety of reasons (fixed battery for one). But one thing that makes the ipod quite compelling is the number of accessories - and I'm not talking about the holders, skins, etc, but rather, the 'electronic' accessories that allow you to plug your ipod into a home system, a car system, a 'docking station', etc.

Forgive my ignorance, but - if I get something like a creative zen player, I'm assuming it won't be compatible ... is that right? The connector at the bottom of an ipod is presumably proprietary.

Correct. If the accessories plug into the bottom of the iPod, they won't be compatible with any other player.
However, if they just plug into the headphone jack, your good.
