Sucks, hmm? So 90-something percent of the population is using crap for software? I'll give you Windows has its downsides, and don't get me started on the crap that was WinME. However, Windows, like it or not, is the common OS, so you either learn to use it, or ignore it. For me, all I'm using Windows for is playing games and ripping CDs (via dMC, of course). Everything else I can do in Linux and actually enjoy myself doing it. Why am I enjoying myself? Cause I actually understand how it works and helped it attain it.

wel LtData you are sure right that it is the common software and the main reason for using it are games although developing software is mostly done for windows, being that big corporations usually use windows, also small home users don't understand how to use linux, so if you want to make progs for "small" people, you are doomed to windows...

otherwise I really like linux and the whole concept of Open source and you can easily do web progreamming under linux...

Personally, I would use Mandrake Linux (now called Mandriva... :( ) or Knoppix Linux as my Operating System, but because I want to be able to play games, and most importantly, be able to use Unreal Editor, I have to use Windows. Also, for some reason, I can't get dialup networking to work in any linux distros. :(

you can't get dial up probably because you have a win modem, which as it name says don't work under linux except in some special cases and even in those cases if you work hard for it....

They won't have to. As long as the modem is controller-based, you won't need to get explicit linux support. The best thing to do would be to google for 56k modems that work in linux and see what you turn up.

well it should be (more or less) any hardware modem (meaning not a software - winmodem) - I think that US Roboticks 56k modems are popular under linux? but I think that for most you can find drivers... just check in advance...

Just get an external serial modem - AFAIK none of those rely on Windoze to do their DSP processing for them. They have other advantages too - easy to fit, easy to replace if the lightning gets them, easy to watch der blinkenlighten to see what the &^%$ they are doing.

You do need to check they have Linux drivers - it is possible to deliver a serial modem that still won't work under Linux, but not because it's a Winmodem.
