Fraunhofer and Thompson will soon be introducing a surround-sound version of mp3. http://news.designtechnica.com/article6041.html
The question is, is this to try to keep other formats from enroaching on mp3's "territory" or is this actually an advancement of technology that will be looked back upon with reverence and amazement.
One thing that keeps this from being such an improvement is:
All CDs are Stereo.
DVD-Audio discs are encrypted to prevent perfect copying and I assume the same applies to SACD discs or whatever that format is called.
Most people just rip to whatever the program on their computer currently does.
Anybody hear of cheap surround sound headphones?
Remember mp3PRO? Anybody?
Yes I'm a little cynical of the mp3 format, but that's just me. Ogg and Monkey's for me. :smile2:
