    Ripped fine at first, now...

    Hey gang,

Um ,the first CD I ripped was fine, bitrates up around 230-250 mark, and the rip only took 10-12 minutes. every cd i've tried since then have taken about 30 mins, and bitrate (even at highest settings) barely hit 200. Can anyone explain what might be going on? Have now downloaded svetla and am using this, priority set to high, no other programs running (ie not listening to music). Any ideas?
    thanks

Strangely enough you'll get better and faster results with priority set to normal or below normal.

Bitrate for this codec is set automatically based on the source track and your quality setting. The FAAC codec appears to provide good results but if a particular bitrate is important to you, you may wish to consider a different mp4/aac codec.

Thanks once more Bill and Christina, I'll try again with different priority setting, then maybe try another codec besides FAAC. Am completely clueless about how quality settings translate though. Guess I'll muddle through.

        Cheers

With respect to understanding the FAAC settings you might check out this thread here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=5700 paying special attention to Hans-Jurgen's posts.
The Psytel codec is supposedly a bit buggier and I have also used the Nero codec. Both give you straight-out options regarding bitrates which this version of the dMC FAAC codec does not provide.

            Again, thanks

I've just tried a test conversion (no write) of an hour long CD and it flew - ripping speed at around 14x and encoding at around 14x. These are exactly the rates that I want. Am I to understand then that it is some kind of codec issue, that when I rip using FAAC I get decent 'rip to ram' speeds but MUCH slower encoding speeds (.5 to 1x, peaking at around 2x)? Regarding the bitrate output of FAAC, by and large with what I've tried I'm pretty happy with it, but I still may try one of the other codecs.
