    Re: Mp3 Patent Problems

The general consensus is that LAME is the best encoder, yes.
As I said in another post, the encoding process is patented. Therefore any program using this process will have to pay the fee.

What I heard is that Thompson bought the mp3 patent from Fraunhoefer and now seeks to collect on their investment or something like that.

wait a minute.....so Fraunhofer has nothing to do with MP3 anymore? is it all just Thompson now?

That's what Spoon says at the bottom of the first page.

CAn I ask you guys a question?

At school I learned about this thing called warez....something about "cracks", serials and keygens....all of these are illegal. Are there people out there who make mp3 encoders and DON'T pay the royalties?

                Re: Mp3 Patent Problems

i don't know if there are actually people who make software to encode mp3 and can get away without paying as they would get caught in the end eventually.

however an example of warez and cracks is when you find a site that has dbpoweramp music converter available for download and has been cracked. in other words the "warez" part is the fact that it is available as a fully registered version without having to register it. the "crack" part is the fact that someone has managed to alter the software so the powerpack never expires. (yes dmc has some cracked versions floating around)

depending on the software depends on depends on if you need a crack or patch or key gen or serial. what a lot of software companies do these days is simply make sure there 30day limited software actually doesn't contain the registered version at all. that way the only way to get the full copy is by buying it from the company. and of course then if they find a registered copy say that you bought they could then maybe track the order number back to you and hold you liable.

WHOA! Joseph, aren't you afraid that by saying that, you'll get banned?

Razgo, thanks for the info on cracks/serials/keygens. Now I'll be more educated at school!

                            Re: Mp3 Patent Problems

i don't think Spoon has set out to make his software high security but he has to prevent the ability to crack his software as difficult as he can as he needs to protect his investments too. and rightly so. but as far as the warez products are concerned most people either go and buy the product after they use a warez version if they like it or simply stop using it. unless it is something really expensive though. and since dmc is as cheap as chips i would like to think they would eventually buy it.

edit: i think there is 2 different topics here one concerning the mp3 encoder and the other the 30 day trial limit. currently the 30 day trial limit does not prevent one from still using the mp3 encoder if you know what to do. and it doesn't involve any cracking or warez. but the 30 day trial limit on the powerpack would require cracking to break and in that case would be doing something illegal. so they are 2 very different things.

Well, the only solution I see out of this after 30 days is to reformat your whole hard drive with Windows....but that is very time consuming..... So......I'll just pay for dMC and save me all that trouble! :D
