Getting Unsupported format error for .m4a files ?

Any advice to troubleshoot this problem. .m4a files created on mobile device recording apps are being rejected as unsupported / corrupted. The files convert perfectly with other conversion programs like NCH switch. I just upgraded from 14 to 17.2 but it has made no difference and the error continues ?
