    Re: Genre / Style

It's always been hard to tell if Steely Dan was a rock band masquerading as a jazz band, or a jazz band masquerading as a rock band. So Rock-Jazz or Jazz-Rock (or however you would phrase it) would be a good choice.

One of my all-time favorite bands, by the way.

Yes, they are quite tricky to pigeon hole! I think Becker was more Rock, and Fagen more Jazz.

If Steely Dan are (STYLE) tagged as 'Jazz-Rock', then what STYLE would you use for Fagen's solo work, please:

I would use Jazz. Fagen left Rock out of his solo efforts.

I agree he's much more 'Jazz' then 'Rock'. But I don't know if 'Jazz' (on it's own) would be accurate?

                  Jazz-Fusion?

I'm not sure how many different "Styles" you want.

DF is a tricky one to categorise. 'Blues' is also a big influence!

                      Re: Genre / Style

The Nightfly is essentially a jazz album, Kamakiriad maybe a bit less so. Neither release qualifies as Jazz-Fusion.

I'm sticking to my guns with Jazz; I have those albums that way in my Genre tags. However, if you feel that they should be Style-tagged as Jazz-Pop, don't hesitate to do so. We're discussing your library after all, and you're the official librarian.

Yes, it ('The Nightfly') is. But for the purposes of my library I think I will place it under: GENRE = Popular. 'Kamakiriad', as you say, is a bit different; I will worry about that one when I come to ripping it.

I will probably go with Jazz-Pop for 'The Nightfly' STYLE.

I just found it in my collection.

No, I wasn't even aware of it. Interesting.

I had a bet with myself that you would.
