Spam, spam, spam, spam, not-so-luverly spam...

I am currently trying out the program SpamWeed, which was given away on a magazine coverdisk, as a method of deducing the amount of Spam I get in my inbox. I only installed the program 5 days ago so I haven't had much time to give it a proper test.

I was wondering what, if anything other people use or do?

Outlook 2003 has a pretty good built in Anti-Spam filter. It was a very much needed addition. The new Outlook also dosen't download images in e-mails so as not to confirm your e-mail address with the originator of the spam.

I don't like how Microsoft Spam filter from Outlook 2003 works ... I use Spambully for Outlook, this is an add-on for Outlook. This spam filter have a lot of features, like Friends/Spammers List, Challenge email, Bounce ... After I learned Spambully, from daily 150-180 emails in my inbox remain only 1-2 spam emails.

Well, somehow Yahoo has a pretty good anti-spam filter. I get very little spam in my inbox, most goes to Bulk. That's great considering this is the email I use specifically to collect spam!

My personal email is handled through my web site where I have taken many measures including using SpamAssassin, a tool provided by the web hosting.

Good emailing practices work the best though.

I use a Yahoo or Hotmail email address for web places where I have to give out an email address (such as forums, online stores, etc). Those are intended to collect spam, promotions or otherwise annoying emails. I occasionally go through those to see if I'm not missing anything important.This happens rarely.

I have a contact email form on my web sites, where my actual email address is not available or visible in any way and cannot be found. This has eliminated email harvesting bots and spiders and any kind of automated spam delivery system. If I were to get annoying email from anybody there, their IP address could easily be banned from accessing my web site. I make no apologies for that either.

I only give out my real email address to people I trust. Big word. Hope they don't let me down.

I never forward any email by keeping with all the other email addresses where it had come through. I delete all of that and only forward the message itself.

I normally use Bcc to send email to multiple recipients, so as not to reveal other people's email addresses either.

I don't respond to chain emails if they have somehow managed to find their way to my inbox (usually they get filtered out as SPAM). Period.

If I'm responding to an unkown sender (and if I feel I must respond), I have a dummy reply-to email address, which will get rejected by my mail server (and totally discarded without a trace) if anybody were to use that instead of my proper contact email form.

Now I use the built in spam filters in Mozilla Thunderbird. Its spam filter are based on Bayesian statistics. You train it to what you feel is junk and what isn't for the first few weeks. Once you've got that out of the way, it knocks out 99% of all junk mail leaving your personal messages alone.
