MP3 support ends, where does it go from here?

Just read an interesting article about MP3.
"MP3 codec retired, licensing program ends"
MP3 codec retired, licensing program ends

Fraunhofer IIS suggests a move to higher quality at lower bitrate modern alternatives like AAC.
Thoughts? Opinions? Will it affect dBpoweramp in any way?

Re: MP3 support ends, where does it go from here?
Mp3 has not been retired, the patents protecting the technology are now retired, which means more software will be able to use mp3 than previously (such as by default in Linux).
dBpoweramp is not affected by the licenses being retired.
