Loads of ripping problems - can someone help please?

    Hello

I recently downloaded dbpoweramp for the first time. I am new to ripping to FLAC, having only used Windows Media Player to rip to MP3s (with no problems).

I'm not good with computers, just want to get all my cds onto a NAS with little effort but at a high quality.

I'm having big problems, hope someone can help.

    First time:
I set up as per Spoon's instructions. All the tracks I tried to rip were classed as inaccurate, no matter what level of rip I chose (Burst/Secure/Ultra Secure). Rip speeds were very slow (around 4x).

I listened back to one or two ripped tracks (Bruno Mars cd) and they were full of glitchy sounds. I played the cd as normal in my machine and it played fine.

Only once (a John Coltrane CD) did a rip work properly and that was at around 14x. I can’t remember whether this was on burst, secure or ultra secure.

    Second time:
I left it for a few days, tried again today and now I am getting constant ‘Insecure’ messages if ripping Secure/Ultra, or ‘inaccurate (23)’ on burst mode (with a very occasional ‘accurate’ cropping up).

Disc speed always around 4x or less.

On Ultra Secure ripping a 3 minute track takes forever. I have about 1,000 cds to rip so need to get through them asap :(

    I have:
    1) Checked that my cd player (a blu-ray player in a Sony Vaio laptop) has latest drivers (well, that's what the Vaio told me)
    2) Tried ripping to the NAS and to the laptop hard drive - no difference
    3) Tried different rip settings (Burst, Secure, Ultra Secure)
    4) Tried different cds.

What is even more annoying is that results are so inconsistent.

I've listed below some of the messages from today when a rip stops.

If you have c2 pointers enabled try disabling them.

But to me it seems as though your CD drive is faulty if it cannot read any disc without errors.

Thanks Spoon. C2 Pointers is not enabled so that option is out.

I'll try an external CD drive and see what happens. This thread about my drive mentions problems that I've had, but nothing about bad rips (I'd never really thought about it being slow to rip or copy cds!) - http://www.sony.co.uk/discussions/th...t=0&tstart=-40

I do have a question about ripping. If the CD drive is the problem how come Windows Media Player managed to rip loads of cds to MP3s (320kbs) with only a rare bad rip, and how come it plays music cds ok?

Quick update - it was the laptop cd drive.

Bought a Liteon ETAU108-02 external drive, ripping away fine now.

The Liteon drive gets good reviews if anyone is interested:

        thanks again for the help
