It is a matter of preference after using many different forum software.
vbulletin is renowned for it's scalablitiy for large communities.
the best thing is to download the different bulletin boards and try them out to see which one you like the best.
the bear spot : BearSpot is a good place to answer questions like this. the developers from vbulletin, phpbb, and IPB, post at this forum.
