editing track numbers

Using my MP3 player mostly for audiobooks, I am sometimes confused when my book appears with file 1 from disc 1, followed by file 1 of disc 2, etc. Is there a simple formula to new new genre with files listed from 001 - 999?. I am a 71 year newbie.
