Maximum number of files to convert

I have about 350,000 files that are roughly 150k that i need to convert to lower quality mp3, with a target size of about 25k. All the files are currently in one folder. if i try to select the whole folder for conversion, the program hangs up and i finally get a run time error.

My computer has 4g of ram. is there a bite size i shouldn't exceed when converting? I'm on the trial version, and if i can get past this hurdle I will most certainly buy this program.

    thanks,
    Gary

Move all the files to a sub-folder, then select just the top folder (the crash is likely loading all 350K files in to the Windows list control, if it is one folder down then it is no loaded).

i moved all the files to a subfolder, then activated the batch converter, selected the parent folder. The program quit before the converter parameter select menu came up.

            Quit without an error?

Are you sure you are using batch converter? (start >> programs >> dbpoweramp music converter >> dBpoweramp Batch Converter

because there would be no parameter select menu, only a check mark in the folder.

yes, thats the way i'm using it.

there is a menu that comes up, after you select the files you want then click CONVERT, there is a menu that comes up for you to select where to put the files, select parameters, etc.

So when you click on the Convert button instead of getting the convert options dialog the program quits? How many files are you selecting (all 350,000)? Have you tried selecting just one to see if it works?

                  Hi Wayne,

Yes, i've tried just one and it works. i've tried a few dozen, it works.

Initially, i did try to select all the files, it bombed. then i tried selecting the folder, bombed again. then, following the earlier posters advice, i made a subfolder and put them all in there, then selected the parent folder. thats when the program just flat out quit. So it seems there is a limit?

                  thanks

Possibly a limit, although there should not be - try splitting to 100K files

Re: Maximum number of files to convert

I split the folder into 3 folders. same thing. although I opened the task manager to see what services were active, and although nothing was showing on the surface, it appears that db is working in the background very slowly...as the process shows the amount of memory being used by the program increasing.

I'm going to turn it on over night and see what happens. i think when i get to maximum system memory its going to crash.

                      thanks so much,
                      Gary

The program would have a 2 to 4 GB limit, anything below that should not be a problem (your swap file should just increase).

Re: Maximum number of files to convert

I have to convert all of my .wav files to a lossless format that contains key tags.

Is there any possibility that the Batch Converter could be re-programmed to convert all tracks in the Library, even if it does one-by-one in the background?

In the meantime, how many 3-4 minute tracks would you estimate take up less space than 4 gB?

If I have to break down files into smaller batches, could they be recombined after all conversions are complete?

The 4GB limit is memory related, if you are converting say quarter of a million files, then even the filenames will take up a significant space (the converter also reads the ID tags before conversion).

If you have 20,000 files there is no problem converting.
